Figuring a fresh start should probably involve a little more professionalism than picturing my face between her thighs.

She studies the card, then looks up at me blankly.

“Congratulations,” she says. That spark of sass coming back to life.

Atta girl.

I can’t help but chuckle and she makes a face that sums up how we both feel, I guess. But maybe for different reasons.

She’s having the weirdest day of her life and it’s almost as though nothing could faze her now.

Especially now she’s with me.

“I just wanted to get that outta the way,” I continue, forcing myself to keep my mind on the job which is to make sure she’s safe.

But also to find out if she knows anything about that damned ticket or any of the people who met their end coming into contact with it.

“Am I in some kind of trouble?” she asks. An edge in her voice that isn’t just the emotions she’s keeping a pretty tight lid on right now.

I open my mouth to speak but shift it to a crimp of a smile instead.

The alarm in her eyes is instant, and I’m just as quick to remind her of something.

“I’ve got a lot to tell you, Megan. But we need to get you someplace safe,” I tell her. Putting my hand over hers when it grips my arm.

“You’re not kidding, are you?” she says with a shiver. As if someone just walked over her grave while reciting a spooky campfire story.

“Harry, what’s happened? Is it my parents?” she asks suddenly, gasping and covering her mouth.

“Your parents are fine.” I comfort her, hoping like hell they are.

Of course, they are.

“It’s just a routine investigation with the police,” I croon. “My old boss asked me to help find you… But I think I made a bit of an ass of myself,” I confess. Feeling my face flush a little.

“I didn’t know you were who I was supposed to be looking for… Not at first.” I explain. Noticing her face falling.

“So… You just want me to go with you to the police, is that it?” she asks, sounding crestfallen.

“For now,”I answer her straight back. Hoping my intense look is telling her that this story’s just starting not ending.

It’s a story about me putting a baby in her belly, keeping her safe forever, and soon.

Megan

City morgue and now police station, all in one day.

I’ve never been in any trouble with the law, but I believe Harry when he starts to explain himself a little better.

I trust him like nobody else, so if he wants me here and wants to fill me in on something, I’m down with that.

I can see at a glance once he ushers me through the big wood and glass doors that he’s no stranger to the place.

I look up at him, wondering why he’s not a cop anymore. But as he guides me through after we’re buzzed in without a word, I can’t help thinking that maybe he still is a cop of sorts.

Just not the kind with a gun and a badge anymore. His firm hand on the small of my back leads me through a network of corridors before we reach an office area divided by partitions.
