And my secret is still safe with me too.

I shake my head at myself once I’ve left her office and sigh. I let myself wonder if not telling her, if letting this secret fester and lying straight to her face is going to be a downfall I can’t come back from.

“Fuck.”

Chapter Eight

“You feel so familiar…

I must have loved you in more than one lifetime.”

-N.R.Hart

Jane

“Good morning, Warren,” I practically sing at him when I see him walk into my office, knowing he could be holding the key to my own little slice of happiness, the notes from my admirer. In the last few weeks, I’ve received three more notes, each one making me swoon even more. I was basically a walking puddle of useless mush on the days I received the poems.

“Morning, Jane,” he says in his deep timbre.

After I got the second note, I started to have Warren keep an eye out for any more. He’s been my coconspirator in the entire endeavor, and I was so lucky to have him in my corner.

Not only was he a fun person, he was kind, gentle, and sweet. I couldn’t believe he was single. And don’t think I didn’t notice how handsome he was. From his neatly groomed beard to his gorgeous man bun that I am sure held back some luscious hair, then under all of that was wide-set shoulders and muscles that had me drooling anytime I thought of him.

Did I have a crush on the mailman? Yes. I did. I wasn’t ashamed of it, but I wouldn’t ever go there.

For one, Warren had been nothing but friendly and kind to me. Humoring me in my attempt to find my secret admirer.

Which brings me to reason two, I had an admirer, someone I still wasn’t any closer to finding at this point. And I had tried. Scouring the office for some man that I didn’t know, looking for clues in the poems and hoping that one of the notes would show up with his name attached.

I was about to take it a step further and I needed Warren’s help. April was the only other person in my life who knew about the mystery man, but Warren worked here and saw just about everyone within a four-floor radius.

“What are your plans for lunch today?” I ask as I take the mail from his outstretched hand, deflating a bit when there’s no special “Jane” envelope. I was addicted to those neatly scrawled letters.

“No idea, why do you ask?” He leans his lean hip against the edge of my desk and folds his arms, his muscles strain against his button-down shirt and I quickly avert my gaze.

No reason to look.

Warren was a nice guy and a huge flirt at times, but guys who were truly interested never hesitated when it came to showing me their intentions and Warren Blake had zero as far as I was concerned.

“I thought we could skip out a little early today and grab a bite.” I raise a brow in question at him and he gives me a look I can’t decipher. I hope he doesn’t think that’s weird, me asking him to lunch, but I was tired of waiting until the mystery man revealed himself. I wanted answers, and I wanted them now.

“I—” Warren’s answer is interrupted by a quick knock on my door before it swings open to reveal Jasper Pierce, president of Pierce Foods, one of the most well-known food companies in the world.

Also, the man my mother has deemed “appropriate” for me to date.

Not that I had any intention of doing so.

Jasper was nice enough to look at but was the epitome of nepotism. He only had his job as president because of his father and mother handing him the title. Though with how much he was around my own office these days, I had little doubt he shirked his responsibilities on others more often than not.

“Jasper,” I say, holding in my sigh of irritation. For so many reasons…

“Jane,” he replies, giving me a grin that I should no doubt find charming.

Spoiler alert; I don’t.

“How are you this morning, lovely?” I hold in the cringe that I want to release at his tone, the total tone of snobbery.

“I’m fine,” I reply and give Warren what I hope is an apologetic look. I discreetly find a piece of paper on my desk and scribble my number onto it and hand it over to Warren. “Thank you for your help, use this soon, please.”
