“The couple at the front desk?” he asked.
She nodded. “I caught them fighting yesterday behind the counter and had to drag them up to my office to sort things out. They hinted that they might know something about someone following Megan.”
“They did?” Wyatt stilled. “Did you find out what?”
Jade shook her head. “No. Tom seemed adamant that Carol was mistaken. Actually, now that I think about it, they both seemed spooked.” She tilted her head and replayed the odd conversation in her mind quickly. “I was so preoccupied with helping find Megan. Then I received so many calls and the call from Amber… I guess I got distracted and forgot to mention it to you last night.”
Wyatt glanced over at Josie, and Jade suddenly realized that he didn’t know that her best friend knew he was FBI.
“She knows,” she told Wyatt. “Sorry. Josie and I… Well, she has a way…”
“Of getting things out of people.” Wyatt sighed. “Yeah, I know. It’s okay. If you didn’t tell her, I was going to soon enough.” He smiled at Josie. “Anyone ever tell you that you’d make a great agent?”
“No.” Josie smiled. “Thanks. If bartending doesn’t work out for me, I know who to call.”
Wyatt chuckled. He turned back to Jade and his smile slipped a little. “So, Carol knows something, but Tom doesn’t want her to tell? Is that about right?”
Jade thought about it and nodded. “Yeah, that’s pretty much how it played out.”
Wyatt frowned. “I can’t simply go up and ask her. I’d be exposing myself.”
“I can do it,” Josie said easily. “What?” she said when Wyatt and Jade looked at her. “You said it yourself. I’d make a great agent. Besides, I’d know instantly if she was lying. I can feed her some line about wanting to catch up with her now that I’m back here.”
“It’s not a bad idea,” Jade said. “Carol and Josie have known each other for a few years.”
“We’re not besties, but we do get along. I was even invited to their wedding. As a guest not a bartender,” she joked.
“Okay, give it a shot. Don’t spook them,” Wyatt said.
“Getting Carol alone is your best bet,” Jade said. “She looked like she wanted to talk but Tom shut her down. It’s what they were fighting about.”
Josie nodded. “I’m on it. I’ll need some time off this afternoon, boss,” she said, turning to Wyatt.
“You have it. I’ll cover for you. But here.” He handed Josie a small black button-like thing. It reminded Jade of the little tags you buy to track your luggage.
“What’s this?” Josie asked, rolling it in her fingers. “It’s not jewelry,” she joked.
“It’s a tracker. Hit the button twice and it sends a 911 message to my phone with your location.” He also handed one to Jade. “I’d like you to have one as well.”
“What about you?” Josie asked. “Who is going to come to your rescue when you need it?” she joked.
“Make sure to have them on you at all times. At least until things are… exposed.”
The waitress walked up to see if they needed anything else, and Jade and Josie tucked the small devices into their pockets.
After lunch, Jade decided to take a quick stroll around the grounds. Most days, she had time to do so at least once, but she’d been too busy yesterday to really get out. Except for her short trip to the beach.
Trying not to be too obvious, she strolled by the front desk. Tom was working behind the counter but there was no sign of Carol. She didn’t know if Carol had the day off or not. The couple usually worked the same shift, but not always.
She stopped and talked to a few other employees that worked behind the front desk. Sean, one of the bellhops, chatted with her for a while. Sean, whose real name was Rushawn, was from Jamaica. He’d decided that since most everyone said his name wrong that he’d just go by Sean instead.
The guy never stopped smiling and joking around and was easily one of the most popular bellhops they had.
She was smiling from her conversation with him when she walked into her office and saw Diane crying.
“What’s wrong?” She rushed over to the older woman.
“It’s Marco,” Diane managed to get out between sobs.
