“Just how do you expect us to find out who is taking these kids? If we are always so busy and can’t be everywhere…”
He’d been thinking about that the entire day as he’d searched for Megan. They had agents that looked young. Young enough to be mistaken as a teenager.
“We have female agents that could—” he started and when she gave him a look, he stopped.
“You expect that, just by chance, this person will pick your agent to kidnap?” she asked.
He’d thought of that too. “So, what? You want to spread a rumor that you know who kidnapped Megan?”
“No, I want to spread a rumor that I have footage we haven’t gone over yet that could possibly have the suspect on it,” she corrected. “If we knew who it was, I would just have them arrested,” she pointed out.
“Smart,” he said with a nod. “But no.”
She leaned in and kissed him. “I don’t need your permission.”
“You don’t, but I’d ask you not to put yourself in danger. If you do this, I’d have to expose myself and protect you.” He cupped her face in his hands. “Please, for me. Wait just a little longer for me to come up with another plan.”
She sighed and then nodded before kissing him. “Okay.” She shifted into his arms. “But I still think it’s a good plan.”
As he lay there with her sleeping in his arms, he had to admit, it was a good plan. One that he would use as a last resort.
For now, he intended to use Josie as much as he could to take his shifts. He had to have more free time to research each and every person on the videos.
A little past two in the morning, he heard Josie come into the suite and disappear into her room just down the hallway. He heard the shower running and then the silence.
Kissing Jade, he started to roll out of bed.
“No,” she said softly. “Stay.”
“I need to install those cameras.” He leaned in and placed a kiss on her lips until he felt her relax again.
“Mkay. Will you be back?” she asked, letting him go.
“No, I’ll see you tomorrow. I don’t want to disturb you.” He kissed her again. “Don’t do… anything we agreed you wouldn’t.” He waited until she nodded before slipping on his shorts and looking for his shirt.
He found it in the hallway where Josie had obviously picked it up and set it on the kitchen counter.
“Sneaking out?” Josie said, scaring him. He almost yelped like a freaking schoolgirl watching a horror movie. Josie chuckled as she stepped back inside from the patio, the smoke from a vape following her.
“No, just…” He swallowed. “Jade didn’t want me to disturb you,” he lied.
Josie’s eyebrows shot up. “Tell me another lie.” She crossed her arms over her chest.
He sighed and moved closer to the doors. “I have a few things to take care of tonight.”
“Like?” she asked, and he knew there was no way he was going to get away with telling her anything but the truth.
He moved closer and lowered his tone since he didn’t want to wake Jade.
“I’m installing a few more cameras around the grounds to fill a couple holes,” he answered.
She tilted her head. “I wasn’t aware that your job was that… varied.”
“It’s not. I’m… It was Jade’s idea. She wanted to keep it a secret from all the employees and guests. Even from security,” he said quickly.
“A covert operation?” Josie asked after a moment, sounding excited. “Can I come?” She glanced down the hallway. “Is Jade not helping?”
“No, and no. She’s… had a long day.” To change the subject, he added, “She found Amber tonight. Well, actually, Amber found her.”
