We let ourselves indulge in a slow, fervent kiss.
I feel her smile against my lips as she pulls away.
I’m about to lean in and steal another when a knock pulls us apart.
I spring to my feet, looking over my shoulder to check that the noise didn’t rouse Adrian.
Ria moves out of bed to go check on him.
I pull open the door to find Gabe standing in the hallway, a grim look on his face.
“You were right.”
Fuck.
I squeeze my hands into fists and have to remind myself that my very scared wife and sleeping son are in the same room.
I turn to tell Ria I’ll be right back when she comes up to us.
Adrian is sucking on a bottle in her arms.
“What’s going on? What were you right about?”
It takes all the strength I have to unclench my fists.
I wanted to spare her this detail, because I have a feeling it may make her spiral into a panic.
I share a look with Gabe and he simply shakes his head at me. He’s done keeping secrets from her, and I can tell by the way his jaw is locked that he feels the betrayal as much as I do.
In the end, the mole turned out to be the same man who kept me away from my family and ordered my best friend to do his dirty work for him.
He took orders from a traitor.
Director Villegas.
* * *
We’re backin the basement less than an hour later.
The three agents posted at the house are now packing everything up in our bedroom.
I wasn’t letting my family out of my sight now after learning about my former boss.
The basement is the only safe space within the four walls of the cabin, and it took very little coaxing to get Ria down here.
Turns out, Ria never trusted Villegas.
As soon as we found out Patty and CJ’s drop off was made in Texas while I was still there, my suspicions started building.
I needed to be sure before bringing it up, so I had Mina compile a list of all the cities and states the Director assigned me to, and compare it with the dates of drop offs.
Every single date matched. Every single drop off was made where I was posted.
It was as if he actively built a case against me, setting me up to take the fall for Santos.
Once Mina made the connection, it didn’t take much coercion to get Ben to do some digging on the Director. They were both as invested in this as Gabe and I were. Ben now had enough evidence to confirm that Villegas was getting paid by a private company owned by a VincentSantos. Finally putting a name to the notorious leader of Sotnas, we were able to do a more thorough search. Ben found several offshore accounts, and from there, he was able to trace the connection between Santos and several cartels all over the world.
Now, our focus is getting the hell out of here.
