Chapter36

Foster

"Why do I feel like a hurricane or a tornado has just ripped through the apartment?" I smiled at Alice trying to make a joke. I wasn't sure how she was thinking or feeling after what had just happened.

"Maybe because one did just rip through the apartment?"

She raised an eyebrow. "So, Foster, I'm going to ask you this once, not because you owed me this information before, but because I'd just like to know now."

"Sure. What is it, Alice?" I asked her curiously.

"How many other women were you sleeping with, had friends with benefits with, or whatever?" She made a face. "I just want to know how many different women might show up claiming you're the father of their baby or that you owe them money or..."

"Why would I owe them money?"

"I don't know." She shrugged. "I don't know what else they could claim, but I just would like to know."

"So you're asking how many women I slept with?" I could feel my heart beating in my chest.

"Well kind of, but not really. Not your entire life, just recent relationships."

"I haven't had any recent relationships." I paused. "I mean, not relationships in the sense of boyfriend-girlfriend."

"Amelia didn't think she was your girlfriend?"

"Oh heck no." I shook my head. "You know that, Alice."

"I mean, yeah, but I also thought Amelia was the only one you'd been, I don't know, messing around with recently."

"There've been a couple of girls." I shrugged. "None of them serious. None of them had any reason to believe we were serious. I mean, I haven't been a monk, Alice, and I hope the fact that I enjoy sex and have been with women casually doesn't upset you or make you not want to give me a shot."

"It doesn't make me want to walk away," she said finally, "but it does give me pause. When's the last time you had an STD test?"

"Actually, it was last month. I had to go in for a physical, and I got an STD test, and everything was all clear. You're the only woman I've been with sexually in the past couple of months."

"Okay." She nodded. "Aren't you going to ask me?"

I stared at her and shook my head. "No, actually. I trust you are clean or you would've said something, and I don't really think you're the sort of woman who messes around with a lot of men."

"Why not?" she said, laughing. "You don't think I'm a woman of the night?"

"I don't," I said. "Even though you gave me a topless lap dance."

"Foster," she said, grinning.

"So yes, dear?" I asked her.

"Are we going to head out to dinner soon? I'm kind of hungry."

I nodded. "I mean, if you're still interested in going."

"Yeah, I'm still interested in going. I'm going to get an appetizer and an entree and dessert and drinks." She laughed. "If that's okay."

"You can have whatever you want."

"Foster, you're a really sweet, nice guy, and I like you. And you're also Rosalie's brother, and you're about to be my boss, and I just..."

"You just what?" I said, taking a step closer to her.
