Sebastian didn’t answer him. Instead, he turned and ran, sprinting down the dark length of the tunnel.
Logan moved after him automatically. There was something in him—maybe the same quality that had helped him survive all these months in Sebastian’s keeping—that just couldn’t give up and let it go. He knew he wasn’t going to catch him, not when he was barely keeping himself upright, not when Sebastian knew where he was going. But he had to try.
He only stopped when a sharp cramp lanced through him, making his muscles clench so hard that he doubled up in pain. He had to brace himself against the tunnel wall.
Sebastian was gone, and it was possible that he was gone for good.
Chapter Thirteen
Iz had tried to joinLogan in pursuing Sebastian, but it only took a couple heart-pounding strides for the wooziness to overtake her again. She stopped, biting the inside of her cheek to try to keep herself from fainting. She wasn’t much good as backup all the way down the tunnel, but she would be evenlessgood for it if she passed out cold, especially since Logan would drain himself dry trying to get her back on her feet.
She felt useless. At least in her dragon form, she’d had some worth and purpose. She had been one half of the solution to getting them out of the cells.
Now she didn’t feel like she wasaddinganything at all. She was just a subtraction, draining energy out of Logan and barely keeping herself conscious.
No wonder Logan had looked so thrown at finding out that they were mates.
She knew that he liked her, but now she had to face the awful possibility that he saw her as a damsel in distress, someone who needed help and rescuing. She had messed up her first real assignment as badly as anyone could. She had been sheltered by her upbringing and damaged by her father.
Her dragon rustled its wings. We are not that. We are not any of those things.
Maybewearen’t, but I am.
Don’t talk nonsense,it retorted. You are me, and I am you, and we are us, and he is ourmate. Claim him! Dig your claws into his back!
That notion almost made her choke. God, she could just picture her fingers raking down Logan’s back. She could almost feel his muscles rippling beneath her hands ....
Off and on, for the whole time she had been here, she had wondered what he looked like. Now she knew, and it made it hard for her to resist touching him.
He was the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. Tall, lean, and strong, with messy black hair, liquid brown eyes, and light brown skin. He had a small white scar crossing one eyebrow, and Iz kept wanting to trace it with her fingers. She wanted to feel the butter-soft leather of his jacket underneath her hands.
The air-snake made its way back to her and reattached itself to her wrist. It let out an inquisitive little hiss.
Iz stroked it, since Logan was off-limits. Its scales were cool and velvety.
Surely Logan would have caught Sebastian by now, if he was going to. Why wasn’t he back?
