She was a brat,Iz thought, the word still painful after all these years. She did the right thing, but that was sheer luck. She didn’t really know what she was doing. And even now, it turns out Istilldon’t know what I’m doing.

Dimitri hated his daughter for what she did. He thought she just didn’t understand. She was an ungrateful brat, getting in over her head.

Just like she would get in over her head later, and take on a case that would end with her stuck in a cage. Just because she wasso surethat she knew what she was doing.

As much as she wanted to tell Logan the truth, though, she couldn’t make herself say that part.

She changed the subject instead. > she said, with forced brightness. >

It was the least subtle conversational switch ever, and she could tell that Logan was considering pressing forward with talking about her past, but again, his innate kindness won out. He wasn’t going to force her into anything she wasn’t ready for.

> he said. >

Raw Kobe beef did sound good to her dragon, but right now, her mind was focused on her human sense of taste.

> She trailed off when she felt how quiet his end of their bond had gotten. >
