No one said what kind of shifter Vin was, and Iz couldn’t imagine asking. He was obviously a private man, and that made it unpardonable to delve into his personal business.

“Welcome to the team,” Cooper said.

She had a team. She had a purpose. She had worked for this moment for years, and she took a second to bask in it.

Finally, she was becoming the person she wanted to be.










Chapter Two

Logan was in hell,and he couldn’t get out of it.

These days, that was about all he knew for sure. He’d even have to hedge a little about his name being Logan. It sounded right, but what was the rest of it?

Logan ... something.

Logan Vegan?

He would have laughed if he could have. No, not that. Given his nearly all-meat diet lately, he definitely wouldn’t qualify for that label.

Vegas?

No, that was a city. He’d been there once, a long time ago, but it hadn’t really been his scene.

Now he wished that he’d at least gambled enough to know what kind of luck he had. Was he lucky enough for his backup to find him, even after all this time? Or was he the kind of guy who endlessly plugged quarters into his favorite slot machine, chasing after a jackpot that was never going to come?

He knew that he felt more like the second kind. Lately, his addiction was hope, and he sacrificed his hours andsanityto it. That was how he paid to keep the game going.

And he was almost out of sanity. All he had left were empty hours and empty days, rattling around like change in the slot machine.

They would get eaten up until he ran out of them too.

Vega, he thought with a sudden rush of relief.

That was his name. Logan Vega.

There, his hellhound said.We remembered.
