“Really?”

“Don’t pretend you don’t know. The last night we were together...” He shook his head. “That was big for me.”

“Me too.”

A nurse appeared at the door with forms in her hand. Jazzy knew her. They’d gone to nursing school together. “I’ve got your discharge paperwork here.”

“Thanks, Teresa.”

“Is he here to drive you home?” Teresa gave Roan an approving gaze.

“No,” Jazzy said at the same moment Roan said, “Yes.”

“You don’t need to be driving. Not with Toradol on board.”

“Huh?” Roan blinked.

“That’s nurse-speak.” Jazzy laughed. “Toradol can make you drowsy and they gave me some when I got here and it’s kicking in.” Jazzy yawned, proving Teresa’s point.

“That’s it. I’m driving you,” Roan said.

“How will I get my car home?” she asked. “It’s in the Emergency Room parking lot.”

“You let me take care of that,” Roan said. “Time to get you into bed.”

“Yes,” Teresa said. “Get some rest and start healing before the bake-off. I can’t wait for you to beat the pants off Andi. We’re all getting really tired of her bragging about what a wonderful baker she is.”

“Thanks for the support,” Jazzy said.

“Anytime.” Teresa winked. “Just sign these forms and read over your home care instructions and we’ll get you out the door.”

“I’ll go bring my truck around,” Roan said and sauntered out.

Teresa watched him go and sighed. “I wouldn’t mind if he were taking me home to bed. Are you two dating or is he just giving you baking lessons like Charlie says.”

Jealousy knifed Jazzy’s chest. “Dating,” she said. “We’re definitely dating.”

Teresa looked disappointed. “Well, good for you. No more moping over Danny Garza?”

“Nope,” Jazzy confirmed. “None.”

“With good reason. Danny’s still an overgrown kid.” Teresa stared at the door where Roan had disappeared. “But there goes arealman.”

“For sure.”

“You’re a lucky woman, Jazzy.”

Yes, she was. She always tried to find the sunny side of life. But when it came to Roan, she felt unsettled and off-balance. Their courtship was a roller coaster, and she wasn’t so sure she had the stamina to stick around, even for a short ride.

Time to change your ways, cowboy.

No more running from his feelings. No more hiding from his fears. He wanted a deeper connection with Jazzy and he ached to break from thecocoon of two years of emotional isolation. Roan wanted to love again.

Wanted to love Jazzy.

He could fall for her so damn easily. If he could lower his guard and open his heart to the possibility.

They had just stopped off at the pharmacy for the antibiotics and the pain pills the doctor had prescribed. Roan glanced over at her bandaged arm and winced. His fault. Her burn was all his fault.
