"Honey, there ain't no insanity plea here. That shit doesn't fly." With a quickness I've only seen in the best, Candy swings her blade in one smooth motion, slicing across her face.
Candy does it again this time; she goes for the throat, sending spray everywhere.
She's sexy as blood drips off her body. I've never seen something so fucking arousing than my woman protecting her family. Like a lioness, she struck her prey hard and fast, slicing away at the woman who had the nerve to come at me.

One year later…
Her body shakes as we wait for the judge to read the verdict. Her father hadn’t met his fate at my hands yet. As fate would have it, he was arrested for extortion and attempted murder of a government official the day after I married Candy.
None of his crimes had anything to do with us, but we were still there to watch the events unfold. Several times we received looks from his wife, who noticed the similarities between her children and Candy. It’s insane how much they resemble each other. Of course, they were not exactly alike because my wife had a special beauty that her sons could never possess, but she was clearly Carlino’s daughter.
Just yesterday, the truth fell out.
The older woman with gray and black hair approached us with Carlino’s oldest son. Her voice was soft yet firm when she tapped my shoulder. We turned, and my guards remained close as I held my wife tightly to my side. Although she grabbed my attention, she was directing her question and gaze to Candy. “Excuse me, but I need to ask you how you know my husband. You’ve been at his trial twice, and I can’t explain how much you look like our daughter who died when she was sixteen.”
“Um…” Her eyes downcast a bit, nervously. I bring her hand to my mouth and kiss it.
“Don’t worry, you’re not going to upset me. I know my husband is a piece of shit.” She nearly spat the words out.
“Mi amor, go on.” I rub my hand on the small of her back.
“I’m the product of a one-night-stand.”
“Oh, we thought you were here because of your parents,” Fiero Jr. says to me.
“What do you know about my parents’ death?” I’m inches from his face now, tension radiating from my bones. This time, Candy tries to hold me back from him.
He holds his hands up and takes a step back slowly. “Nothing but rumors that my father had something to do with it. Honestly, I haven’t had anything to do with him in years. I’ve told my mother to get away, but she’s been too afraid to leave. Maybe this will do the trick. Tomorrow may be the blessing we’ve been waiting for. By the way, you’re not the only stray progeny out there. We have two brothers.”
“Really?” Candy asks.
“Both of them are CPD.” We laugh at the irony. “That’s how he got busted in the first place.”
“That’s good to know.”
“I’m sorry if he did have a hand in your parents’ deaths,” Mrs. Carlino says.
“Thank you.”
We parted ways with a promise to meet Candy’s other brothers, although I didn’t want to deal with them if they were all above board. That shit would end with me in prison one day. Fuck if I’d let anyone take me from my sweetness. I’ll just have to make sure she forgets all about them.
My thoughts of yesterday are all forgotten as the judge begins to read the verdict. “The jury finds the defendant guilty on all counts. The sentencing phase will begin tomorrow at nine am.” The courtroom is emptied as they cheer that he’s found guilty. Looking over at my wife, she doesn’t appear as happy.
“What’s wrong, mi amor?”
“It’s just sad how everything turned out. How can we explain to our son that his grandfather is in prison and killed his other grandparents?”
“We don’t. At least not until our son is older. Remember, this is our life now, mi dulce. You’re still so damn sweet—sometimes.”
“I’m ready to go home and snuggle with our son.”
“Good. How is this little one doing?” I’ve been worried about the trial stressing her out since we just learned of her pregnancy last week.
“Fine. Tiny. I’m hungry now that you mention it.”
