“That wasn’t an answer.” He waded closer. “Do you regret sleeping with me?”

My heart pounded as I spun around. “Now? Yes.”

His brow furrowed. “But you didn’t before?”

“Why would I?” He was a fucking god in bed.

The lines on his forehead deepened. “Because you…cried after.”

Fire scorched up my neck. “You remember that?”

“I can’t forget it.”

I sank into the water, drowning myself in mortification, but within moments, Adam grabbed my arms and pulled me to the surface. “You don’t need to be embarrassed, Cass. I do.” His penetrating gaze stole my breath. “If I hurt you—”

“You didn’t hurt me!” I peered up into his azure eyes, mirroring the illuminated water around us. “If anything, you woke me up.”

“From what?”

“I…I don’t know exactly.” I swallowed back the emotion rising up my throat. “I’ve never experienced anything like that before.”

Adam gushed. “Tell me about it.”

“No, you don’t understand.” I waded out of his reach. “I got married so young, I never got to explore that side of myself. So, what happened between us was…overwhelming.”

“Wait…” His head recoiled. “Are you telling me…you’ve only been with two guys?”

“When I told you I wasn’t that sort of girl, I meant it.”

“Oh, fuck.” Adam ran his hand over his mouth. “And you let me do all those things to you.” He winced. “You should’ve told me.”

My irritation piqued. “I didn’t do anything I didn’t want to, Adam.”

“I made you cry!” He smacked the water. “Fuck!”

“You caught me off-guard, that’s all. I probably went over my quota of orgasms for one night.”

“Surely you’ve had multiple orgasms before.”

“I’m starting to question whether I’ve had any at all…before you,” I said, not recalling a single night similar. “Don’t get me wrong, Dom was a beautiful husband, and I loved him with everything I had, but there was always something missing with us. I guess that was it.”

Adam blew all the air from his lungs. “The way you were that night…I assumed…”

“I had one night in Manhattan to be anyone I wanted to be…todoanything I wanted.” I shook my head. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, but the girl you met was playing pretend.”

“I don’t know about that.”

I lifted my gaze to meet his penetrating stare. “I’m not a risk taker, Adam. Everything is reliant on this job, and I won’t jeopardize that.”

“What about after?”

“After what?”

“Your job here is done.”

I frowned. “Then I’ll go back to a very different life.”

“What if I don’t want you to?”
