“Don’t be worried about the price tag.” Josie shrugged. “Adam isn’t.”

My mouth parted, but nothing came out. I’d been too busy avoiding every shade of Adam’s favorite color to worry about the cost.

“Try it on,” she continued, pushing me toward the change room. “That color will make your green eyes pop.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” I mumbled while disappearing behind the curtain.

Drawing a deep breath, I slipped the knee-length dress over my body and reluctantly lifted my gaze to the mirror.Wow.Not only was the cut comfortable and flattering, the intricate lace was unexpectedly soft.If only it came in another color.

“Don’t you dare tell me it looks awful,” Josie called out. “I can hear you gushing.”

With a soft giggle, I pulled the curtain aside. “I think I should try the other one.”

“The fuck you will.” Josie shoved the navy dress back on the rack. “You’re getting that one.”

I hung my head back with a groan before yanking the curtain closed. While carefully removing the dress and returning it to its hanger, I couldn’t help but steal a glimpse of the price tag.Four thousand dollars?!For a dress?!My car didn’t cost that much. I was about to argue my point to Josie when I caught sight of the finer details.

Made in France

Size: 2

Color: Mint.

Mint?Mint wasn’t necessarily a shade of green…it could be blue! A light blue!

“So, did you decide on the green one?” the shop assistant asked through the drapes.

My eyes squeezed shut. “It appears so,” I muttered, before stepping out and handing over the troublesome dress.

Josie rejoiced before handing over her credit card. “We’ll take the matching shawl, too.”

After we’d found a clutch and suitable shoes for a beach wedding, Josie took me out for lunch. She wanted Grayson to spend some quality alone time with Liam, so there was no rush to return, and Harrison was still fast asleep.

“Thank you for taking me out today, Josie,” I said, twirling the pasta on my fork. “I can’t remember the last time I went shopping for something other than groceries.”

“It’s been fun for me, too.” She gazed down at her sleeping son. “I feel like I’m surrounded by boys at the moment.”

“You’ll have to try for a girl next. Even the playing field.”

“Ugh, I can’t imagine how tiringtwokids would be.”

I wished I knew. Although I got pregnant young, Dominic and I wanted more kids. We had a beautiful home with a big backyard, perfect for a growing family. But now, it was just me and Finn, and for the past four years, I could barely keep a roof over our heads.

“I think you would manage just fine,” I said as she tucked in Harrison’s blanket. “You and Grayson are naturals.”

Josie grew somber. “It must be hard raising a child on your own.”

“You do what you have to.” Sorrow filled my heart. “That’s why I took this job.”

“You must miss him.”

I blinked back the tears as they formed. “So much.”

Josie reached over and rested her hand upon mine. “Have you told Grampa yet?”

I shook my head. “I can’t risk Caroline and William finding out. They never would’ve hired me if they knew I had a son.”

“But that doesn’t matter now. You have the job, and you’re killing it.” Her brown eyes widened. “That’s not an appropriate thing to say in your line of work, is it?”
