Grayson smiled. “Goodnight, Cass, and thanks for putting up with our shit. We appreciate it.”

I shrugged. “That’s what I’m here for.”

If only my heart followed the same job description.

My heart skipped a beat when I found Liam missing from bed the next morning.

“Where is he?” I asked Mrs. Fredrich, who was noting something in his chart. She didn’t care for pleasantries, so I jumped straight to the point.

“He was adamant about seeing the sunrise through the drawing room window this morning, so I authorized his grandson to take him downstairs.”

“Oh.” My eyebrows drew together as I left the room and headed for the stairs.

Once I reached the French doors, I peeked inside to find Liam gazing out at the soft glow of the sun while Adam stood beside his wheelchair with his hand resting upon his grandfather’s shoulder. The intense energy from their bond was as bright as the streams of light cutting through the glass, and I suddenly understood the grief Adam was facing.

As if sensing my presence, Adam turned my way.

“Hey,” I whispered, knowing Liam enjoyed the morning silence.

“Sorry for stealing him this morning.” Adam squeezed his grandfather’s shoulder before stepping toward me. “It’s my grandmother’s birthday.”

“Oh…” I lowered my gaze to Liam. “I didn’t know.”

Liam’s eyes glazed over, clearly reliving a memory we weren’t a part of.

“Hey…” Adam grazed my bicep. “I didn’t know it either. Max told me late last night.”

“I wish he’d told me.”

“Well, you’re not supposed to be working today.”

“I know.” My brow furrowed. “But I care about him.” More than I should.

His playful smirk returned. “Should I be jealous?”

“Absolutely.”

As we both endeavored to hide our smiles, Max walked in with a pot of tea. “Good morning, Cassidy. Shall I bring you another cup?”

“It’s okay, Max,” Adam answered. “I’ll make Cassidy a coffee.”

My head recoiled. “You will?” Not that I was complaining.

“Come on.” He motioned for me to follow. “I had my favorite blend delivered yesterday.”

I trailed Adam down the hall and into the kitchen. “What’s wrong with Max’s coffee?”

“It does the job, but it never leaves me satisfied.”

“Like all the women in your life,” Grayson muttered as he strolled in behind us with Harrison fussing in his arms.

“Not all the women,” Adam mumbled under his breath as he moved to the coffee machine.

“Is Harry okay?” I asked, trying not to overthink Adam’s words.

“He’s still hungry, but Josie’s exhausted, so I’m going to top off his feed with some formula while she sleeps in.”
