I groaned inwardly. “He’s just being friendly, Liam.”
“Oh, let an old man have his fun.” He waved me off. “It’s boring up here.”
“Well, your grandson is here to entertain you now, so you can stop trying to meddle.”
“Very well.” Liam smiled as Adam hammered away on his keyboard. “I’ll meddle in his life instead.”
Adam moaned. “Gramps…”
“You two are no fun. Perhaps the two of you should go out.”
Our fear struck faces collided.
“I’ll go find Max.” I made a beeline to the door.
“I’ve got work to do,” Adam muttered at the same time.
As Liam’s laughter filled the room, dread filled my stomach. If only he knew how compatible we were...but only in bed.
“Your boyfriend is coming up the hall,” Nora whispered as she strode into Liam’s room to where I sat at his bedside.
My gaze snapped to Adam on the couch in time to witness the subtle pulse of his jaw while he continued working on his laptop.
“Very funny.” I enlarged my eyes to alert her to the pricked ears. Adam was adamant about sticking around for the doctor’s appointment.
Nora’s eyebrows rose. “Oh, Adam, I didn’t realize you were still in town.”
“Yes, I’ve decided to stay the week.”
Her twinkling eyes traveled to mine. “Your grandfather must love that.”
“You bet I do.” Liam smiled groggily as he stirred awake.
“It’s a full house today,” Marc said, waltzing into the room. He acknowledged everyone with a nod, but his gaze lingered on mine a fraction longer.
I squirmed under Adam’s judgment. “Perfect timing. Liam’s just waking up now.”
“Wonderful.” His perfect smile widened as he panned his gaze to his patient. “How have you been feeling, Liam?”
“Fine.”
“Tell the truth, Liam,” I said, taking a sterner tone.
“Alright… The pain’s getting worse.”
Marc’s eyes softened before picking up his chart. “Unfortunately, that’s to be expected at this stage. I’m going to increase the medication for your pain.”
“Do we have to do that?” Liam’s face was riddled with apprehension. “It makes me so sleepy.”
“Your body is under a lot of stress. If we don’t, you’ll increase your risk of heart failure.”
Adam materialized at Liam’s bedside. “Can’t Cassidy just do more of that Reiki stuff?”
“She does enough, Adam.” Liam grasped his grandson’s hand before turning to the doctor. “Give it to me straight, Doc. How much time do I have?”
With a growl, Adam tore his hand away and marched out of the room.
My heart ached as I stared at the empty doorway. Why can’t I shut him out?
