Me: Did Josie tell you about the doc?
Amy: What doc?
Me: Never mind.
Amy: Tell me about the doc?!
Me: He’s cute.
Amy: *face palm*
Marc returned to Harlow Manor on Friday afternoon to go over Liam’s medication with the nurses. While chatting and laughing with him in the hallway, I spied Adam walking up the hall, rolling his suitcase behind him. His hard gaze met mine, then Marc’s, before disappearing into his room with a notable snarl.
“I should get going,” Marc announced with a sigh. He clearly didn’t want to leave as much as I didn’t want him to.
“So, I’ll see you next week?”
“Yes. Liam’s bloodwork should be ready by Tuesday.”
“Great,” I said, too enthusiastically.
His dimples deepened with his smile. “Perhaps I could check in with you over the weekend?”
“Of course! I’ll be here!”Oh my God, kill me now.
“Good.” He pressed his lips together, like he was holding back. “Well, I better go. I have to get back to the city. You know how it is.”
With equally awkward grins, we returned to Liam’s room, where Marc collected his medical bag.
“Enjoy your weekend, Cassidy.” His gaze held mine before drifting to Liam. “And Liam. No parties, okay?”
“No promises,” he uttered with a coarse chuckle. “Mrs. Fredrich is a wild one.”
As Marc snickered on his way out, I moved to Liam’s bedside, sensing his pain from across the room. I sat in the chair beside him and took his hand to massage his pressure points, hoping to ease some discomfort.
“Marc’s quite taken with you.”
“Oh, he’s just doing his job.”
“He normally just calls the nurse to take my blood, so I suspect he was here to see you.”
My mouth slackened but snapped shut when Adam strolled into the room.
“Hey, Gramps.” He nodded in my direction but remained expressionless. “Cassidy.”
I smiled tightly in acknowledgment but said nothing.
“How was your week, Adam?” Liam asked with genuine interest.
“Busy.” His gaze locked onto the crystals on his grandfather’s nightstand. “What the hell are those for?”
I stood. “I should go.”
“Nonsense.” Liam grasped my hand. “Unless you have a date with a certain young doctor you need to get ready for?”
Adam’s gaze shot to mine. “That’s not very appropriate.”
“Oh, they’re grown adults, Adam…relax.”
