Finn shrugged. “Whatever. As long as it’s near my school.”

“Which school?”

“Mom didn’t tell you? I got a swimming scholarship to Summerhill.”

Adam’s eyebrows rose. “Summerhill, eh?”

“Mom says they have the best swim team on the entire West Coast.”

“Did she?”

Heat crept up my neck. “Well, they must’ve upped their game in the last few years.”

Adam let go of a deep, alluring chuckle. “Well, you’ll fit in just fine, then.”

“Okay, time to go.” I took Finn’s bag off his shoulder and placed it on mine.

“Mom, please!” Finn begged. “I want to go with Adam.”

Adam rested his hand on my son’s shoulder. “I can drop him home later.”

“Please, Mom…”

“Fine.” I grimaced. “You’ve got one hour.”

“Thank you,” Finn gushed out as he hugged me.

“I should probably get your new number.” Adam pulled out his phone. “Just in case we get stuck in traffic or something.”

“It’s fine. Finn’s got a phone now. He can call me if there’s a problem.”

Adam pressed his lips together as he shoved the phone back into his pocket. “Great. Okay, well…we’ll see you later.”

“One hour.”

“One hour,” the boys repeated.

As I attempted to open the car door with trembling hands, Adam and Finn sped out of the parking lot in Liam’s Rolls. I should’ve been angry that Adam had shown up at my son’s race, but there was something about his presence that lifted my spirit. My burning resentment for Harlow Corp. faded the second my son smiled up at Adam, and for a moment, I imagined how good our lives could’ve been together.

If only.

While I taped up another box in my bedroom, Finn’s laughter burst through the front door.

“Mom, we’re back!”

My eyes widened. Adam was supposed to drop him off, not come in.

Finn ran past me as I lugged the box up the hall. “Hey, where are you going so fast?”

“Bathroom!”

“Oh, okay.” I continued to the front door where Adam stood talking to my father.

Dad motioned him inside. “Would you like to stay for a beer?”

I dumped the box on top of the others with a grunt. “I’m sure Adam has somewhere else to be, Dad.”

Adam’s eyes moved from mine, to the pile of boxes, then back to my father. “I don’t, actually, so yes. I’d love one, Dean.”
