“How can you possibly prepare for death?”
“Look, it’s what your grandfather wants, and I’m not about to argue with a man on his death bed.”
“Sounds like a hoax to me.”
My temper spiked.
“Well, he’s quite taken with her, so please don’t make an issue out of it—unless you’re planning to live here full-time to keep him company.”
He sighed. “If I didn’t have so much work, it wouldn’t be an issue.”
“He knows how busy you are.” Her voice grew surprisingly soft. “Harlow Corp. is your priority right now.”
There was a moment’s silence before the man spoke again. “When are you and Dad leaving for your trip?”
“Monday. We wanted to spend the weekend with you before we left. Your father is itching for a report on the company.”
“Itching to tell me how to run it, you mean.” His voice grew closer, hovering outside my door.
“Adam…”
“Just get the nurse to tell me when he wakes.” The door across the hall slammed shut, and I jumped. His bedroom was opposite mine.Fan-fucking-tastic.
An hour later, I crept out of my room to see Nora before she left.
“I bet you can’t wait to see your kids,” I said, leaning against the doorframe of her bedroom.
“I’m counting the minutes.” Nora grinned as she zipped up her suitcase and placed it on the floor. “My eldest has a big game this weekend.”
“That’s exciting.” I smiled through my envy. I was missing my son’s swim meet.
“Is there anything you need before I go?”
I forced a grimace. “Advice on how to deal with this family?”
“Is Caroline giving you trouble? Because I can speak to Liam.”
“No, no. I can handle her. I heard Liam’s grandson arrive earlier. He didn’t sound very pleased about someone like me being here.”
“Oh, Adam? That boy is all business. I doubt he’ll take his nose out of his laptop long enough to notice your existence.” She ran her gaze over my body and smirked. “But then again…”
I gaped. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“He’s known to be quite the womanizer.”
I scoffed. “Well, I’d never go there.”
She chuckled. “Have you met him?”
“No, not yet.”
“Mmm…” Her crafty smile lingered. “Well, let’s just say I wouldn’t blame you if you did.”
I attempted to object, but an older lady strode past me into the room, stealing my attention.
“That’s my cue!” Nora said when the tall, broad-shouldered lady with a tight bun of gray hair, placed her suitcase on the freshly made bed.
“Hi, you must be the weekend nurse,” I said when she didn’t speak.
