“We’re very impressed with your son’s results, and we’d like to offer him a place. It’s by far the best training camp in America, and we feel it’s what Finn needs to take his swimming to the next level.”

My heart burst with pride. “That’s amazing.”

“We just need your deposit by next week to secure his place.”

“Deposit?” I closed my eyes. “How much is it?”

“The fees are outlined in the letter, but it comes to approximately $3,000.”

My jaw dropped. “$3,000?”

“Yes, but we can offer a payment plan under special circumstances.”

I refused to take on any more debt, but I couldn’t bear to say no. “Can I get back to you?”

“Yes, but make it soon. There are a lot of kids wanting this spot.”

“I will. Thank you.”

After I hung up, I frantically dialed my father’s number.

“You didn’t think to tell me about Finn’s swimming camp?!”

Dad sighed. “He didn’t want me to.”

“I’m his mom. I need to know these things.”

“I’m sorry, but I thought I was doing the right thing. Finn knows it’s beyond your reach right now, and he didn’t want you to feel any more guilt.”

“Oh.”

“Reed offered to pay, but Finn flat-out refused. He said you wouldn’t accept any more charity.”

“Well, he’s right,” I uttered proudly. “Everyone has already done enough for us. Will you let me talk to him?”

“Hang on a sec.” There was some rustling before Finn answered.

“Hey, Mom.” His voice sounded far away. Too far.

“Baby, why didn’t you tell me you got offered a place at that camp you’ve been talking about?”

“Because we’re saving for more important things.”

My heart sank. Swimming was his world and the one aspect of his life he could control. “This is important, too…and there’s a possibility I could make it happen.”

“I’m not letting you sell a kidney, Mom.”

Laughter settled my nerves. “No, baby, it’s my job. They’ve asked me to stay on over Christmas, maybe a little longer, depending on Liam, and they’ve offered me a lot of money to do so.”

“How much more?”

“Enough to rent a house with a backyard and get you to camp.”

“Really?”

“Yes…but it’s a sacrifice…and one I’ll only make if you’re on board.”

Finn grew silent. “Do you think our new house could have a pool?”
