“There’s no need to get so defensive.” He took back the fork to feed himself.

“I’m not. I just… I had stuff to do, okay?”

“Was your husband like this?” Liam asked me as he placed his cutlery back on the plate.

“I…I don’t know what you mean.”

“Moody, defensive…secretive?”

Adam scowled in my peripheral vision.

“The opposite, actually.” It was neither an insult, nor a compliment.

Adam crossed his arms as he shifted in the chair.

“And where did you meet?” Liam appeared to have forgotten his grandson was there.

“At the coffee shop where I worked…why?”

“See, Adam…” Liam turned to his grandson. “You’re never going to find a nice girl in those bars you go to.”

Adam huffed. “Who says I’m looking for a nice girl?”

“A boy, then? Because I’m okay with that.”

I pressed my lips together, trying not to laugh. Liam had a cheeky sense of humor.

“Give me a break, Gramps. You’re starting to sound like Mom.”

“We just want you to be happy.”

“Well, women have a tendency of getting in the way of that.”

I pursed my lips. His comment was completely directed at me.

Liam’s eyes twinkled like he was holding onto a secret. “Life wasn’t meant to be easy, Adam, but the right woman will make it worth it.”

“Alright.” Adam slapped his hands on his thighs before standing. “If all you want to do is talk about my love life, I’m going back to my room.”

“Oh. I’m just having some fun,” Liam said as Max walked in with a bowl of ice cream.

My body heated on sight. Is it mint chocolate chip?

“I’ve got too much on my mind for fun, Gramps. I’ve barely slept in two days.”

“Sounds like you need Cassidy’s magic hands.”

I cowered over my meal. He did not say that.

“No,” Adam uttered sternly. “What Ineedis a break.” He proceeded to walk out but paused beside Max. With a heated glare my way, he took the bowl of ice cream and scooped some into his mouth. “It’s not the same.”

Max frowned. “I assure you I’ve bought the same flavor and brand for the past seventeen years.”

Adam licked his lips, sending my libido into overdrive. “It’s never going to be the fucking same.” He shoved the bowl back into Max’s hands and stormed out of the room, muttering furiously to himself.

I took Liam’s hand as worry seeped into the creases on his face. “I’ll talk to him once he’s cooled off.”

“Thank you, Cassidy.” His eyes glazed over. “He wouldn’t behave this way if everything was okay. He needs someone…someone to…”
