“Well, he knows now.”

I turned to her when we reached my door. “You should tell Grayson, if you haven’t already. I’m sorry to put you in the middle of all this.”

“I promised Amy I wouldn’t tell a soul, and I keep my promises. Plus, it keeps Grayson out of Adam’s firing line.”

“What about you?”

“I can handle my brother-in-law,” she said with a fearless smirk. “And don’t worry, he can’t be far away; the helicopter’s still here. We’ll call him again after breakfast.”

“Thanks, Jos.”

“It’ll be okay.” She reached out and squeezed my hand before disappearing down the hall.

If only I believed her.

On my way back from a swim later that afternoon, I heard an argument erupt in the drawing room. I hid in the shadows of the hallway with pricked ears and a desperate heart, needing to know what was going on with Adam.

“You knew?! All this time?!”

“I didn’t think it would do any harm,” Josie retorted. “Cassidy has been through so much, and I wanted to give her the break she deserved. She had to sell their home to pay for her husband’s medical bills, for Christ’s sake. It’s not fair.”

“That’s not the point here,” Grayson uttered angrily. “If Mom and Dad find out she lied on her application, they’ll terminate her contract immediately.”

“No, Gramps won’t allow it.”

“Gramps may not have a say,” he snapped back.

“What are you talking about? Ultimately, he is her employer.”

“Not if they convince the doc that he’s not fit enough to make his own decisions.”

Josie gasped. “There’s no way Marc will agree to that.”

“Well, as it turns out, the doc’s a married man. My father could use his infidelity against him to manipulate the situation.”

“What? Like blackmail?”

“He’s done it before.”

“No, Adam won’t let him. He wouldn’t stoop that low.”

Grayson grew quiet. “You know how he gets when he’s angry.”

“He’s only angry because Cassidy is making him feel something.”

“She’s got a kid, Jos. Adam isn’t…he’s never…fuck. He’s going to tell Mom and Dad the first chance he gets.”

“When are they due back?”

“Two weeks.”

“Then we have two weeks to diffuse the situation. Give him a chance, Gray. Your brother may surprise you.”

Grayson exhaled heavily. “For Cassidy’s sake, I hope you’re right.”

Me: I know you’re angry, but please come back. For your grandfather’s sake. I’ll stay out of your way, I promise.

There was no response. Not even disappearing dots.
