Her hazel gaze softened. “How did he take it?”

“Well, he’s not here now, is he?” He was probably halfway back to LA by now.

Josie grumbled. “He’ll come around…in time.”

“Time isn’t something we have in abundance here.” I rubbed my tired eyes. I’d barely slept. “I’ve really fucked up.”

“You can’t blame yourself for his reaction, Cass.”

My nostrils burned as I held back tears. “How can I not? Adam’s supposed to be here, spending time with his grandfather, andI’mthe reason he’s not.”

“No. His selfish, stubborn, infuriating nature is the reason he’s not. It’s about time he grew up and thought of someone other than himself for once.”

“Do you think he’ll tell Caroline and William?”

Josie thought for a moment before shaking her head. “He wouldn’t do that to you.”

“Wouldn’t he? He’s ruthless with everything else in his life.”

“Not with you.”

“I don’t know why.” I folded my arms. “He made it perfectly clear I wasn’t his type.”

“Because you’re not stupid, plastic, or unavailable.”

“But he said…”

“Forget what he said. There’s more truth in his actions. And when Amy called to say you were in trouble last night, he was already halfway through the door before I could even find our car keys.”

“Argh.” I cried. “I’ve never met anyone so complicated. With Dominic, I always knew what he was thinking, but with Adam…he just stirs me up.”

“In a good way or a bad way?”

“I…I don’t know.”

“I think you stir up some pretty conflicting feelings in him, too.”

“The only feeling he has for me now is disdain. You should’ve seen his face when he found out I have a child.”

“He’ll come around.”

“No, no… It’s better this way.”

“For whom?”

“For both of us. I need to concentrate on my job, and he needs to focus on his grandfather.”

“I have to admit…the timing does suck,” she said before a small smile settled upon her lips. “But love has a way of creeping up on us.”

“Love?” I scoffed. “We barely know each other.”

“But there’s something growing, and if I can see it, you can definitely feel it.”

I pushed away the absurd notion as I walked on. “All I feel right now is regret.”

“Come on, Cass. He was going to find out about Finn sooner or later.”

“Neverwas the plan.”
