“Oh, it didn’t need to be. Liam knows I’m on a date.”

“I wasn’t referring to Liam…” Marc said with a bashful smile.

Heat rose up my neck. “Adam?”

Marc frowned. “Liam’s grandson? No. I’m talking about your husband.”

“My husband?”

“Aren’t you married?” He lowered his gaze to my hand resting on the table. “Oh, you took it off. I do that, too.”

“What?”

“I don’t wear my ring either. Too many questions.”

All the blood drained from my face. “You’re married?”

“I assumed you knew…that’s why I can’t visit Liam on weekends. I’m with my family in the city.”

I struggled to fill my lungs. “You have kids?”

“Two girls.”

“And a wife?” I could barely form the words.

“Yes, but we have an understanding.” He placed his hand over mine. “As long as I’m discreet, I can…”

I pulled away as I stood. “I need to go to the restroom.”

“Are you okay?”

“I just need a minute.” I grabbed my handbag and maneuvered through the tables toward the back of the restaurant, searching for privacy.

Once I found the restroom, I stumbled into an empty stall and sunk onto the closed toilet seat, burying my face in my hands. How could I have been so stupid? How did I not know he was married?

As I took deep breaths and willed myself not to cry, my handbag vibrated in my lap. Expecting it to be Marc, wondering if I’d fallen in, I reached in and pulled out my cell. It was a video-call, and as soon as I saw my sister’s face, tears filled my eyes.

I tried my hardest to keep it together. “Hey, Ames.”

“Are you okay?” Her giant blue eyes examined my face. “I had a bad feeling…”

“I wish you’d called earlier. I could’ve avoided the humiliation.”

Amy fell back onto her couch, next to Josie and Grayson’s enormous dog. “What the hell happened?”

“I finally agreed to a date with the doctor, and I just found out he is married.”

“You mean…separated?”

“I meanmarried…with two kids!”

Her mouth fell open. “Oh, Cass. That sucks. Where are you now?”

“Hiding in the restroom in a little restaurant called La Cabane—or however you pronounce it.”

“I’ll get Josie to come get you.”

“No, it’s fine. I’ll get a cab.”
