Levi sighed, rubbing his forehead. “We aren’t talking about this anymore. We have bigger problems on our hands, such as understanding what happened to our code.”
Dan waved a hand, turning his attention back to the paper he was working on. Levi sighed, happy they didn’t press on. He looked at Hannah, who was still watching. She held a cup of water now, seeming to be waiting for him to call her back. He waved her in.
After what seemed like forever, Levi finally seemed to see the problem. He scowled at his paper. “This can’t be right.”
Everyone looked at him, and Levi read over the paper once more, just to be sure he was reading it right.
He had been told that Lincoln wanted his code and his work for them to go to Mars. He’d been told they were working on it for a while, and his work was going to help them get there. But reading this, they weren’t going to Mars. No, it looked like they were planning on using this to make military hardware.
Levi scowled, pissed. Hannah looked at him. “What’s wrong?”
He flipped through the papers once more. How had he not seen this before? It was all in between the lines now that he thought about it.
But he wondered why he cared. It wasn’t like he was creating the weapons with his own hands. He wasn’t the person making those decisions, just giving them the blueprints. He shouldn’t care. If they wanted to make drones for the army, that wasn’t his concern.
Yet, he knew that wasn’t entirely true either. He couldn’t say he had no hand in it because he did. He wasn’t the same person he had been before he got kidnapped.
As much as he wanted to stay the same, he wasn’t. Levi knew the kidnappers had taken him for a cause, and it wasn’t a terrible one. They didn’t want drones being built that could be used by the highest bidder with no oversight. They didn’t want dangerous weapons being made that could cause a lot of destruction. And Levi had played a hand in it.
He couldn’t say he didn’t care because why else would he have been so defensive about everything that had happened? Why else would he have had a fit over Hannah just saying the word drone the other night? Levi wondered if maybe it was his duty to provide the world with tools to be used for good rather than evil.
He glanced his eyes over everything, shaking his head. “It doesn’t add up,” he finally said, not sure if he wanted to tell Hannah. What would she say if she found out the truth?
He flipped through files and glanced over charts. After what seemed like a while, Levi decided there wasn’t anything he could do right now. He might as well head home and think about it there.
“All right.” He pushed himself up, glancing at what was left of the team. Most had gone home, and only a few were still there. “I’m heading out. You all did excellent work today. I’ll send everyone an email in the morning, and we can reassess then.”
Levi picked up his laptop and pushed everything deep into his bag. He turned to Hannah standing by the door. She waited patiently as he walked through, tense.
“Are you all right?” she asked, in step beside him. “You look angry.”
“It’s nothing,” he said, pushing the elevator button. “Nothing to worry about.” At least not now. He wasn’t a hundred percent sure, but once he had all the scans and information he needed, he could decide what to do. Until then, he needed to remain calm.
“Let’s just get going. It’s been a long day.” Hannah looked as if she wanted to ask him something but decided against it. “I’m driving.”
“Fine,” he said, hearing the elevator ding. They both got in. “That’s fine.”
He honestly didn’t think he could drive. His mind was somewhere else at the moment.
As they left the building, he said goodnight to Jarad, who still held the stern expression he had when they got in. Hannah jumped into the car, starting it. Levi sighed, unsure of what his future held.

HANNAH
They returned to the Audi, and Hannah climbed into the front seat. She’d rather be in control for the time being, just in case anyone was following them or would soon be following them.
After barely pulling out of the parking lot, Levi let out a long, satisfying sigh. She looked at him briefly.
“What’s going on?”
Levi turned to face her, and she listened to his wonderful voice as she drove.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about last night,” he said. “I could barely focus in there.”
Hannah felt his hand crawl onto her leg as she drove on. It took everything within her power to keep from biting her lip and suggesting that they pull to the side of the road or a warehouse somewhere to fuck.
But she knew there weren’t any restraints around to keep her from hurting him even more than she had the last time. Plus, she was working for him and still had to decide what the hell she was going to do about all of this fated mates business.
