Slowly, he pulled away. “I’m getting the feeling you’re not really into this.”

“I’m not.” She gave a small shake of the head and touched a finger to her lips. “What have you been eating?”

He flopped back in his seat, chuckling. “Brownies. Why?”

“I can taste it. Maybe don’t go stuffing your face the next time you intend to stick your tongue down someone’s throat.”

“I’ll bear it in mind. Do you want another drink?”

“If you’re thinking I’ll be more enthusiastic about kissing you when I’m drunk, you’re probably going to be disappointed.”

“I wasn’t trying to get you drunk. Even if I have no chance with you, I don’t like seeing you upset. The least I can do is keep you company while you drown your sorrows.” He flashed her a mischievous grin as he stood up. “If you want, you can even bitch about Noah and his new girlfriend to me.”

“I’m not upset about Noah.” She growled in frustration. “Just get me a beer.”

The sensible move would be to go home before Kit reappeared with Holly, but the suggestion to drown her sorrows was tempting too.

“You look confused,” Felix said, handing her a beer.

Her brow was creased in a frown as she ran her fingers over her lips, wondering at the familiar tingling sensation on them. “What did you say you’d been eating?”

He shrugged. “Brownies. Do you want some?”

“Probably not.” She poked her tongue out as the tingling spread throughout her mouth. “Did they by any chance have peanuts in them?”

“Um …” Sheepishly, he screwed his face up.

“Are you serious?” She slapped him on the arm. “You ate peanuts and then kissed me … are you trying to kill me?”

“Obviously I wasn’t thinking about what I’d recently eaten when I kissed you. But now that you mention it, they might have been peanut butter brownies.”

“Felix!”

“Sorry. Are you okay?”

“I’m having an allergic reaction to your kiss,” she snapped.

“You’re having a reaction topeanut butter, not me. How are you so allergic that you have a reaction from second-hand peanut butter?”

“I really hope you’re not expecting me to apologise for having an allergic reaction. You’re such an idiot!” She put a hand to her neck as a tickle niggled at her throat.

Felix rubbed her shoulder. “Are you going to be okay?”

“Probably. Can you get me a glass of water? And grab my bag too. It should have my antihistamines in there.” As she said it, she had a sinking feeling. The bag was new and she couldn’t remember if she had her emergency supplies in there or not. Usually she always had antihistamines and her EpiPen with her.

Her mouth felt as though she’d been eating sand by the time Felix returned with Cadan behind him.

“Are you all right?” Cadan asked.

She nodded and swilled her mouth out, then spat the water onto the grass before rummaging in her bag for her meds.

“I should be fine in a bit,” she said.

“Can you seriously get an allergic reaction from kissing someone who’s been eating peanuts?”

“I don’t see why you’re confused by the concept,” she said, looking at Cadan and then Felix. “I’m allergic to peanuts – it doesn’t make any difference how they get into my system.”

“Do you need to go to the hospital?” Cadan asked.
