“Good.”
“You were with Noah, right?” Upstairs he went straight to the kitchen and opened the fridge. Without asking he took out two beers, then searched the drawers for a bottle opener.
Seren watched him in amusement. “I was with Kit. Visiting Trystan.”
“Oh, that’s right … Noah’s cheating on you with some bird he met in Bristol.”
“I’m not going to dignify that with a reply.” She leaned on the counter and took the beer that he held out to her. “Are you really staying all summer?”
“That’s the plan.”
“What about work?”
“I’m between jobs, so I’ll work on my CV and take a few shifts in the pub.”
She had the bottle to her mouth and almost choked on her beer when she laughed. “As if you’ll work in the pub.” He’d never had any interest in working in the pub, but his dad was usually willing to pay him to stand around not doing much.
“I’ll keep you company while you work,” he said with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“That sounds more like it.”
“The weather’s been amazing this weekend. If it stays like this it’ll be a fantastic summer. You need to tell me where the good parties are these days.”
“I have no idea. I can’t remember the last time I went to a party.” She’d hazard a guess and say it was some time before Terry Treneary died. No one she spent time with had been in much of a party mood since then.
“Where do you hang out?”
“The Mermaid Inn.”
He laughed. “We need to find somewhere further away from my dad. Felix’s place will do, I suppose.”
“Felix is back?” The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end at the mention of her ex-boyfriend.
“I’m staying at his place.” Cadan’s lips twitched to a smirk. “I’m sure I told you that.”
“We both know you didn’t mention that. What’s he doing back?” The last she’d heard he was in London, though she wasn’t sure what exactly he did there.
“His parents have gone away for a couple of months. Some business thing in the States. Felix said he’d come and keep an eye on Rebecca and the house.”
“Isn’t his sister old enough to look after herself?”
“Yeah, and she’s fairly hot these days too. She grew up well.”
Seren rolled her eyes. “Please tell me you have more sense than to go there?”
“Yeah.” He chuckled. “Felix would kill me. Anyway, he’s taking a working holiday over here.”
“What does he do these days?”
“Web design or something.”
“Shouldn’t you know? Isn’t he your best friend?” It annoyed her immensely that Cadan had kept up his friendship with Felix after he’d broken things off with Seren. Out of loyalty she thought Cadan should have dropped him.
“I know what he does … something to do with web design.” He checked his watch. “Do you want to go over there?”
“To Felix’s place?”
“Yeah. We’re going to drink some beers and smoke a joint.”
