“You’re like a teenager.” He drew back slightly. “Tell you not to do something and you suddenly want to do it.”
“It’s not that I didn’t want to kiss you. Things just feel a bit awkward … we know each other so well, but now we have to get to know each other all over again. In a different way.”
“I think that’s a good thing.”
“So do I, but it’s also a bit scary.”
He smiled lightly. “Was kissing me weird?”
“No.” She gave him another lingering kiss. “I like the idea of date night … butwithkissing.”
He shook his head. “I think we should stick with the no kissing rule. You definitely shouldn’t kiss me.”
After swatting at him playfully, she pulled him close again and swept her lips over his. Her stomach flipped when he tightened his arms around her back and kissed her deeply.
Finally, they moved apart and set to work making dinner, then gravitated back to the couch and spent the evening alternating between chatting, kissing and watching TV. Kissing Kit quickly felt like the most natural thing in the world.
“Are you okay?” he asked her, catching her staring into the bowl of popcorn while the over-the-top American baking show played in the background.
“Yeah. I’m fine.”
“You looked miles away.” He gazed at her intently. “This will sound odd, but were you thinking about my brother?”
“Yes.” She smiled at how well he knew her.
“Mum said you’d had an argument with him. She didn’t really tell me what it was about.”
Hesitantly, she filled Kit in on the situation with Felix. “I know you’ll think I’m completely naive,” she said when she’d explained everything. “But I believe what Felix said. I’m not saying he was blameless in our break-up, and I certainly don’t think his behaviour was acceptable, but I don’t think he’s a terrible person. He cares about me in his own way.” She waited for Kit to tell her she was an idiot, or at least to roll his eyes. He didn’t though.
“I reckon you’re probably right.”
She blinked a few times in quick succession. “Excuse me? Did I just hear you right?”
“Yes.” His shoulders hitched. “I think he’s probably not so bad. And he definitely cares about you.” When she glowered at him, he smiled back at her. “He came to see me this afternoon. Told me there’s nothing going on between you two.”
“See.” She snuggled into Kit’s chest. “He’s quite sweet really.”
“Let’s not go too far.” He ran a hand over her hair. “What are you going to do about Noah?”
“Avoid him.”
“That’s mature!”
“Well, he’s too stubborn to admit he did anything wrong.”
“You’re both stubborn. And you’re both going to be miserable until you sort things out. Just call him.”
“No,” she said firmly. “I don’t want to. I just want to hide away with you and forget about the outside world until the rain stops.”
“When are you working next?” he asked.
“Not until Wednesday afternoon.”
“If the weather forecast is right, I’ve got the whole week off. I really hope it doesn’t end up being longer than that.” Brushing her hair from her forehead, he tilted her face up to his and kissed her – softly at first and then with more passion. As things heated up, they shifted to lying on the couch. Their heavy breathing was partially muffled by the sound of the rain hitting the windows. Seren’s heart felt as though it was going to beat out of her chest as the weight of Kit’s body pressed down on her. His hand slipped under her T-shirt while his lips trailed over her jaw, then nuzzled her earlobe and her neck.
“Kit,” she said breathlessly.
He groaned in response and continued kissing her.
