“Sometimes isn’t good enough. Besides, the only times she’s nice to you is when she wants something or when she’s trying to get back in your good books. That’s never going to be a solid relationship. She’s not right for you, and any time you spend with her is a waste …” The beeper sounded. “If you’re with her you might miss out on meeting someone great,” Keira added in a rush.
“Time’s up,” Mel said pointedly.
“You’re not allowed to be annoyed with me, remember? You said you wanted the truth.”
Mel puffed her cheeks up and blew out a breath. “You made some valid points and I’ll consider them.”
“That was actually fun!”
“Can I do you now?”
“What?”
“I’d like to tell you what I really think about your problems …”
Keira eyed her suspiciously. “Was that all a setup so you could have ten minutes to tell me what you think?”
“Yes.”
“Were you even thinking of giving Tiffany another chance?”
“God, no. She’s a nightmare. I’m setting the timer again. I have ten minutes …”
“You tricked me!”
“Whatever … brace yourself, because you’re about to hear what a complete idiot I think you are … and you’re not allowed to be offended.”
“I’m confused,” Keira said. “I didn’t think you usually held your tongue when it comes to telling me what you think.”
“I don’t.” Her brows knitted together and sadness flashed in her eyes. “This is a bit sensitive though. I’ve been debating whether to say anything for a while. Partly because I’m not sure how I feel about the advice I’m about to give you.”
“What is it?” Keira asked hesitantly.
“Noah loves you,” Mel stated.
Keira shrugged. “He’s never said it.”
“That doesn’t matter. It’s obvious. It’s also obvious that neither of you are very good at long distance.”
“That’s true. But he doesn’t seem to have any plans to come back here … oh god … You think I should break up with him?”
“No.” She bit her lip. “He asked you to move there, didn’t he?”
“Yes, but …”
“Did you even consider it?”
“No. It’s ridiculous. I can’t move there, and why should I, when he was the one to leave? He shouldn’t have left.”
“He explained why he needed to leave and you accepted his reasons at the time.”
“I suppose I did.” She’d been reasonably understanding until she started to miss him.
“What’s keeping you here?” Mel asked. “Aside from your awesome best friend?”
“My job …”
“You could get a new job.”
