“Almostcertain? You don’t sound very sure.”
“There’s no way …” His brow furrowed as though considering the possibility.
“If that was your girlfriend fawning all over some other guy would you be okay with that?”
“Probably not.” He winced. “I don’t think I have a girlfriend any more.”
“Shit. Sorry.”
He waved a dismissive hand in front of his face. “It’s fine. But if it were my girlfriend, I’d at least give her a chance to explain.”
“I don’t think I can face him,” she said sadly.
Trystan pulled his phone from his pocket. “You’re stuck on an island, so I’m afraid you don’t have much choice.”
“Are you calling him?”
He nodded in reply and she listened to him telling Noah that she was there and he should get outside quick. The door burst open before Trystan had even put his phone away again.
“I thought you couldn’t make it this weekend,” Noah said, rushing towards her with a huge grin on his face.
“I didn’t think I could.” Her brain struggled to comprehend him being pleased to see her.
“It’s so great that you’re here.” He wrapped her in a hug and she caught Trystan flash her a smile before slipping into the pub. “What’s wrong?” Noah asked when she was less than enthusiastic in her greeting.
“I wanted to surprise you.” She sighed as she pulled away from him. “But I came in the pub and saw you all over Seren …”
“No … I wasn’t … she was upset and I was comforting her. That’s all.”
“I feel like such an idiot. I wanted to talk to you about moving here, but now it seems utterly insane. Do you even want to be with me?”
“Of course I want to be with you. That’s why Seren was upset.”
She raised her eyebrows. “Really? She was upset about you wanting to be with me?”
“No.” He shook his head. “That came out wrong. I told her I was going to move back to Bristol. She was upset about me leaving again, not me wanting to be with you. She’s happy about that.”
“You’re thinking of moving back to Bristol?”
“Yes. I wanted to be sure before I mentioned it.” He took both of her hands and looked her right in the eyes. “I want to be with you. Whatever you saw in there with Seren was nothing. I swear.”
“I don’t know what to think.” Keira swiped at a tear, which rolled onto her cheek.
“Seren’s my friend, that’s all. You believe me, don’t you?”
“I did, but when I saw you together it definitely seemed as though it was more than friendship.” She sniffed. “I’m so confused.”
“You honestly have nothing to worry about. I just don’t know how to convince you of that.”
The door to the pub opened and Seren peeked out. “Is everything okay?”
“Fine,” Noah said curtly. “We just need some time to talk.”
“I was wondering if I could speak to Keira for a minute,” she said, venturing outside.
“Not now,” Noah said. “Can you give us some space?”
“No. Wait.” Keira caught Seren’s eye, intrigued as to what she had to say. “We’ll be back in a minute,” she said to Noah and set off with Seren in the direction of the harbour.
