“I don’tthinkso,” Drew said, pulling Maisie close. “Iknowso.”
Drew pressed her lips to Maisie’s, sending an immediate and unexpected burst of longing through her. “It’s too bad we can’t head to the cabin.”
“I thought you were tired,” Drew whispered, not loosening her grip on Maisie’s waist in the slightest.
“All of a sudden, not so much.” Maisie took a step back, and Drew let her go. “It’s going to be a long, lonely night.”
Drew swallowed hard. “Maybe it doesn’t have to be.”
“I could’ve sworn you were exhausted earlier, too,” Maisie teased.
Drew offered a naughty half smile. “I may be getting a second wind.”
“What are you suggesting?” Maisie held her breath, pretty sure she knew the answer.
“Well, my bedroom is right down the hall.”
“So is your dad’s,” Maisie felt compelled to point out. “And your sister’s, too.”
“True, but I’m pretty sure my dad won’t come barging in with a shotgun if he catches me sleeping with my own wife.”
“And your sister?”
“She doesn’t like shotguns. More of a pistol gal,” Drew joked.
Maisie swatted Drew’s shoulder. “I meant, what would she think if she found out we were sleeping together?”
“Probably that you don’t have as good of taste as she thought.” Drew shrugged as Maisie gave her aquit goofing offglare. “The truth is we’re adults. We’ve been having sex for months. We’ve been married even longer. And we like each other. Hell, we even went on a date. Don’t you think it’s time we stopped worrying about what other people will think?”
“Have you thought this through?” Maisie asked quietly. “You have more to lose in all this than I do. These are your people.”
“I’m not saying we should make a big announcement,” Drew said carefully. “Just that we shouldn’t be so scared of getting caught, if that makes sense.”
Maisie nodded. “If you’re sure. There’s just one other thing, though, that I need to clear up before I decide.”
“What’s that?” Now it seemed it was Drew’s turn to hold her breath.
“You said welikeeach other.” Maisie tipped her head so she could look into Drew’s eyes. “You stand by that statement?”
“Well, I…” Drew’s eyes got bigger as Maisie continued to hold them with her gaze.
“There’s still time to make an amendment, if you feel so inclined,” Maisie prodded, her mouth twitching at the range of emotions that played across Drew’s face.
“I…” Drew cleared her throat. “I can’t speak for both of us, but I think it’s fair to say I more than like you.”
“You do?”
Drew nodded and swallowed hard. “In fact, it’s possible I’m falling in love with you, Maisie Campbell.”
“Campbell?” Maisie tilted her head and felt the blood rushing from it. Or maybe to it. She was too overwhelmed to be sure. Was Drew serious about that?
Drew shrugged, an almost sure sign she’d meant every word she’d said. And all the ones she hadn’t, too. “It has a nice ring to it.”
“I’ll have to think about that. But as it happens, Drew Sullivan”—Maisie grinned as Drew’s eyes popped, loving how genuine the reaction was—“I just might be falling in love with you, too.”
“That’s a relief.” Letting out a long breath, Drew grabbed Maisie’s hand, leading her down the dark hallway. “Let’s go to bed, Wife.”
