And he kept coming inside of her.

“You’re not supposed to fall asleep in the bed of a man who told you he was a dangerous criminal,” Remy’s voice rumbled against her.

She rolled over and cuddled closer to him. A few moments before, he’d left to ditch the condom. But he’d come back, and she’d snuggled close to him. She hadn’t thought he wanted to talk, but now he was being all rumbly.

She didn’t bother to open her eyes. Her whole body felt limp. So sated. How did sex with Remy just keep getting better and better? Would it always be this incredible?

“Come to think of it, you probably shouldn’t have had sex with the guy who told you that, too.”

But she had. Wonderful, amazing sex. “I have no regrets.”

His index finger had been drawing little circles on her hip, but at her words, he stilled. “Why not?”

Oh, let me count the ways. But, maybe she wouldn’t count them. She’d just start by naming the biggest item on her list. “Because I love you.”

Chapter Fifteen

Silence.

She waited for him to say something. Anything. He didn’t. So, even though she really wanted to drift into an orgasm-induced, bliss-filled sleep, Jacqueline slowly opened her eyes.

His stunned stare greeted her. “You…” Gruff. Raspy. “Don’t.”

“Oh, but I think I do.”

“Jacqueline.” A ragged sigh escaped him. “You’re confusing good sex with love.”

Jacqueline couldn’t help it, she laughed. A deep, rolling, eye-tearing laugh that just tore from her. Her whole body shook because Remy was too hilarious.

“I don’t think you’re supposed to laugh.”

“Wait.” She swiped at the corner of her eye. She also pulled up the sheet to cover her breasts as she rose to a sitting position in the bed. “You were serious?”

A dip of his head.Yes.

“Remy, I couldnothave sex with you ever again…” What a waste that would be. “And I’d still love you.”

This time, he shook his head.No.

“Yes,” she said deliberately.

“You’re grateful to me.”

She fisted the sheets.

“You were scared, and you are appreciative that I stepped in to help, but, sweetness, that’s not love.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Pain flashed across his face as he looked at her.

“It isn’t,” she repeated. “And yes, I was scared, and I do appreciate your help, but none of that is love.”

“Wouldn’t know.” His gaze flew to stare at the nearby wall, as if that plain, white wall contained some sort of artistic masterpiece. It didn’t. “I’ve never been in love.”

She ignored the dig into her heart. After all, she hadn’t thought that he loved her. But Jacqueline knew exactly how she felt for him. She’d faced her feelings in that country club as water poured onto her when she’d wanted nothing more than to race back to Remy’s side. “I hadn’t, either.”
