He gave her more. He thrust and thrust and his fingers worked her and when he came…so did she. Or maybe she’d never stopped coming. She couldn’t tell for sure. All Jacqueline knew was that when Remy bellowed her name in release, she cried out his, too.

When she opened her eyes, the bed was empty.

Jacqueline jerked upright. The last thing she remembered was…pleasure. So much bliss streaming through her entire body. Remy’s dark gaze locked on her. And then…

Then they’d kind of collapsed. She’d sunk into a deep sleep. She’dfallenasleep after sex with Remy. Now she was alone in the big bed, and Remy was…

“Don’t make a sound,” he warned her.

Her head whipped to the right. She wasnotalone. The blinds had been lowered. The curtains closed, but when she squinted, she could make out Remy’s shadowy form near the window on the right.

“We have company,” he added, his voice whisper soft. “Bastard is coming for the back door right now.”

Company? While she was stark naked in the bed? Automatically, Jacqueline yanked the sheet up to her chin.

“I want you to stay up here. Lock the door behind me.” Again, his words were so low they seemed to be barely a breath.

Stay there while he…what? Faced the bad guy on his own? Dragging the sheet with her, Jacqueline climbed from the bed. She managed to roughly loop the sheet around her, toga-style, as she tiptoed toward him. Her bare toes pressed into the floor. “You need backup.”

“You’re not trained. Didn’t we cover this already?”

Yes, they had, and then they’d gone to having hot, incredible sex, and, afterwards, she’d apparently passed out on the guy, and now she had no idea how much time had passed. It just felt late and scary and the hunters were closing in on them. “I want to help.”

He brushed a kiss over her forehead. “Help by staying up here. By staying safe.”

She reached for him. Her hands touched his clothes. Fully dressed. Had he been awake the whole time she slept?

“Don’t worry.” A low rasp from Remy. “I can handle these guys in my sleep. I just need to know you’re safe.”

She wanted to know the same thing about him. His safety was of major importance to her. “Don’t get hurt.”

“Not on my agenda.” His fingers curled under her chin. “Just in case, hide in the closet for me, will you?”

Hide in the closet?“In case of what, exactly?” But she knew.

In case they get past Remy. In case Remy gets hurt. Or…killed?

No. Not happening. Not.

“If anyone but me comes through the bedroom door and gets to the closet…” He reached down and…

The gun.

He put a gun in her hand again.

“Got this one from downstairs for you. The safety is on, but you take it off by doing this.” He moved her fingers. Showed her. “If anyone but me comes through the bedroom door and gets to you in the closet, you shoot, got it?”

This plan had her stomach twisting.

“I’ll be back before you can even miss me.”

He was wrong about that. So wrong. When the bedroom door shut a moment later, she already missed him.

The sun had set. Remy had fully expected the bastards to wait until nightfall before they came at him with their pitiful attempt at an attack, and yes, the pricks were acting just as he’d predicted.
