“Asshole,” he muttered.

“Colt seems like a decent guy,” I said. We’d met Jessa’s boyfriend a couple of times, but it was the first time we were spending any length of time with him.

“He is,” Nix said. “He treats her right and makes her happy. That’s all I want for her. Do you think your mom will make it?” he asked Kye.

“Your guess is as good as mine.” He shrugged but I saw the pain in his eyes. “Miller brought plenty of the good stuff for later.”

“Keep your voice down,” Nate said.

“Relax, it’s all good.”

I was screwed.

Celeste had somehow managed to burrow under my skin and thaw the layers of ice around my heart.

And now that she was there, I never wanted her to leave.

Celeste

“Can somebody get that?” Jessa called.

“I’ll get it.” I hurried over to the front door and opened it. “Dad, what are you doing here? Sorry, I mean—”

“It’s okay, sweetheart.” He smiled. “I know I’m turning up unannounced, but I wondered if perhaps there was room for one more?”

“I thought you were meeting with Mom today?”
