“I didn’t sleep.”

“Let me guess you got a hold of some strong liquor. Don’t think I don’t know a hangover when I see one. Question is, why were you getting drunk home alone? Unless you weren’t alone?” His brows waggled.

“Fuck off, Carter.”

“Hey, Nix, do you know why lover boy is hungover?”

I glanced over at Nix, and he kept a neutral expression. “Nope.”

“Hmm.” Kye studied the two of us. “Why do I feel like you’re not telling me everything?”

Coach chose that moment to enter the room. “Look alive, ladies. I want asses on the field in five minutes.” He tapped his clipboard against the wall and headed out the door leading to the football field.

“This conversation isn’t over,” Kye said.

I chose silence. I didn’t want to talk about it. Not with Nix, not with Kye, and definitely not in front of the rest of the team.

I pulled on my shoulder pads and jersey before shoving my feet into my cleats and bending to tie them.

“Better haul ass, Washington, or Coach will have us all running suicides again,” Hench called, and I flipped him off over my shoulder.

My teammates began to file out of the locker room, but my cell bleeped, so I grabbed it out of my bag and read the message.

Unknown: I have it. Meet me at the same place. Midday. Don’t be late.

Shit.

Me: Midday is a little difficult for me. Can we make it after three thirty?

Unknown: Midday. Be there or I’ll assume you no longer need it.

Fuck.

I quickly texted back.

Me: I’ll be there.

I just had to figure out how I was going to get out of school without raising the alarm.

Celeste

I hadn’t heardfrom Zane since he’d walked away from me. But I hadn’t texted him either.

I was trying to figure out what to say to him. How to put into words what last night meant to me.

Harleigh and Nix might have believed that we were doomed but I was choosing not to believe that.

We’d hadsex.

Out of all the girls he could have called up, he’d called me. That had to mean something.

Didn’t it?

“Mom?” I balked as I entered the kitchen.

“Don’t sound so surprised, Celeste. I do live here too, you know.”

“I just wasn’t expecting to see you is all.”
