“Until then.” He winked, inching away from me, his eyes refusing to break their hold on me.

“Until then.”

My heart was a runaway train in my chest. I’d always known being with Nix would be intense, but I hadn’t realized just how much of a roller coaster it would be.

He lingered, waiting until I got into Celeste’s car. Waited until she pulled out of the parking lot and we disappeared down the street.

We hadn’t even gotten around the corner when my cell phone vibrated.

Hot Tub Guy: In case you hadn’t already noticed, I’m gone for you, B.

“God, I want that,” Celeste was peering over.

“Watch the road,” I snapped, pulling my cell phone closer to my body.

“Sparred, they sparred.”

“Same thing.” She shrugged. “And you saw the state of Nix’s face. I dread to think what Max looks like.”

“Do you know why he’d want to fight for Bryson?”

“You have met Max, right? He’s not exactly an open book. Why?”

“I don’t know, it just feels like we’re missing something.”

“He probably wants to brag to his friends,” she said dismissively.

And I got it. Max wasn’t a good person, and he definitely wasn’t a good brother. But something didn’t add up.

And I couldn’t shake the feeling there was more to Maximilian Rowe than either of us knew.
