“Nix,” Chloe kneeled before me. “What happened?”
“I… I don’t fucking know. She tripped and—”
“Fell into your lap?” She rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, something like that. Next thing I know, she’s kissing me.”
“I need to call Harleigh.” Pulling out her cell phone, she pressed the screen and waited. “Shit, it’s ringing out. I’ll try Celeste.”
But she didn’t answer either.
“I’m going to text her.”
“She’s long gone,” Kye said, wearing a frown. “I saw her, and it didn’t look good.”
I was out of my chair, fisting his t-shirt. “You saw her, and you didn’t—”
“I tried. I fucking tried, okay? But I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t know you were making out with Cherri.”
“I wasn’t…” Fuck, I was.
At least, that’s what Harleigh thought she’d seen.
Fuck.
Fuck.
I shoved Kye away and dropped back down in the chair, defeated. She didn’t trust me. Even now, even after everything, Harleigh still didn’t trust me. And maybe it wasn’t her fault. Maybe it was the part of her brain she had no control over. But it didn’t change the fact that she saw me with Cherri and assumed the worst. She didn’t even confront me. She just left.
She ran.
She was always running from me.
“Fuck this, I’m out.” I got up again and stumbled toward the cars. Chloe and Kye followed me but gave me a wide berth. I could hear them whispering, trying to decide what to do with me. But I shut them out. I shut it all out.
Harleigh had been here.
Now she was gone.
And I didn’t know what the fuck to do with her anymore.
“I’m telling you, Nix, go sleep it off and tomorrow things won’t seem so bad.” Kye leaned over and squeezed my shoulder.
He’d volunteered to drive when it was apparent I couldn’t. Whatever my teammates had put in that drink had knocked me on my ass.
Fucking idiots.
If I hadn’t drunk it, maybe I wouldn’t be here now. And if Harleigh hadn’t tried to surprise me… Who was I kidding? If the universe wasn’t dead set on fucking us over, Cherri had planned to do it anyway.
It had happened and we were here instead of being at the mill, wrapped up in each other celebrating.
“Fuck,” I murmured, kicking the glove compartment.
“You need to chill the fuck out before you head home.”
“What I need, is to talk to Harleigh, but since she won’t answer her cell phone and you fucking idiots won’t take me over there, I guess I don’t have much choice—”
“You’ll thank us tomorrow,” Zane said.
