“Alright, Mom.” I shoved him away, laughing off the tense moment. “Grab a tissue. I think you have a tear right”—I reached for his face—“there.”
“Fuck you, Wilder. Fuck. You. I’m over here trying to be all serious and shit and you’re acting like it’s a joke.”
“What’s a joke?” Zane hopped off the hood of my car as we burst through the doors.
“Kye’s acting like a proud mama bear,” I teased, and he flipped me off, grumbling something about not bothering to support me next time.
“Did he have a moment?” Zane smirked.
“Fuck you, assholes, I’ll keep the tequila to myself.” He ducked inside the back seat of my car and Zane and I climbed in the front.
“You sure you want to head to the res?” Zane asked me, and I shrugged, jamming the key into the ignition.
“Harleigh wants me to celebrate with you guys.”
“She should be there,” Kye said.
“She’s not ready.”
“She seemed pretty ready earlier after the game.” Zane snorted, and I pinned him with a hard look. “Relax, I’m joking. It was good to see her step out of the shadows for once.”
“Yeah.” My lips twitched. It had been pretty fucking epic, not that many people had seen us. And the few that had, knew me better than to make a big deal out of it.
Fuck, I just wanted to see her. Not go and party with the team.
“One hour,” I said, firing up the car. “You get one hour and then I’m out of there.”
The party was in full swing by the time we arrived. A loud chorus of cheers filled the air as we weaved our way through the crowd. Hench, Gunner, and a few of the other guys from the team descended on me and before I knew it, someone had a cup of some disgusting concoction in my hand.
“Fuck that,” I said, staring at the funky looking drink.
“Come on, Wilder. We’re celebrating. It’s not every day a Hawk lands himself a D1 scholarship.”
“I haven’t got it yet.”
“You’re a sure thing,” someone shouted. “At least, that’s what all the girls say.”
The crowd snickered and I scowled.
“From what I saw earlier,” Hench chimed in. “Wilder is officially off the market. The question is, who was the little hottie waiting on the sidelines for him? Huh?” His eyes flashed to mine, and he smirked.
“Fuck off,” I mouthed at him. He chuckled, draining his beer.
“Well, don’t just stand there, Wilder,” Gunner grinned. “Drink it.”
“Drink it, drink it,” they all began to chant. I glanced at Zane and Kye for a little back up, but the two of them only smirked.
Traitorous fuckers.
“One hour,” I pinned them with a dark look before bringing the cup to my lips and downing it in one.
“Motherfucker,” I hissed, the liquor burning the whole way down. Everyone cheered, and someone thrust a beer into my hands, so I washed away the bitter taste.
“No more surprises,” I said to no one in particular, but the crowd was already dispersing.
We headed for our regular spot by the bonfire, and I sank into one of the chairs, sipping on my beer.
“You want?” Zane waved a blunt in front of me, and I shook my head.
