Calder’s face appeared in the shattered window. With a glance, he climbed through the opening. “You guys okay?”

“Mostly,” I answered.

He moved to unlock the door, leaving it open before coming straight to us. “What the hell happened?”

“I think it was a Molotov cocktail.”

Calder’s eyes widened as he took in the damage to the floor and the blanket as more firefighters came in, checking the scene. “Shit. That could’ve been bad.”

I pulled Addie closer to my chest. “Addie’s face is cut. I need you to get my kit in the upstairs bathroom.”

“You got it. Hadley should be here any second, too. She’s on duty with Jones.”

As soon as he said her name, Hadley appeared in the doorway. She rushed forward. “Oh, God. Are you guys okay? What happened? Do you need the hospital?”

Calder’s hand landed on his wife’s shoulder. “They’re okay, Little Daredevil. Just breathe.”

She scowled at him. “Don’t tell me to breathe. They could’ve been killed.”

“We’re all right, Hads. Just need to get Addie cleaned up. Calder’s going to get my kit.”

Calder gave me a chin lift and headed for the stairs. Hadley looked at Addie. “Can I see?”

Addie tried to shuffle off my lap, but I held firm.

“I’m fine, just a little nick.”

Hadley’s hands went to her hips. “Let the professional be the judge of that.”

Addie tipped her head back to give Hadley a better view as she snapped on some gloves. Hadley let out a low whistle. “I think this needs stitches.”

“I’ve got the glue. I’ll patch her up.”

Addie squirmed again. “Will you let me up, please?”

Hadley’s lips twitched. “Yeah, Beck. Release the girl already.”

I grumbled something under my breath but let Addie go. We both climbed to our feet as Calder appeared at the bottom of the stairs. “Where do you want this?”

“Let’s go to the kitchen.”

We made our way back to the space as Hadley told her EMT partner we had things covered. I moved to the sink to wash my hands. They trembled slightly as I held them under the spray. I sent myself a mental order to pull it together.

Addie slid onto a stool, and Hadley and Calder stayed close. I opened the kit and pulled on some gloves. “We’ll clean your cheek, but I want to feel your head, too.”

“I didn’t hit it that hard.”

I sent Addie a look, and she snapped her mouth closed. I gently prodded her scalp and didn’t miss the wince when I hit a small bump. I parted her hair but didn’t see any sign of blood. “Anything besides the pain? Dizzy? Sensitivity to light?”

“No, just hurts a little.”

Calder crossed to the fridge, pulling out some orange juice. “Want some crackers with your juice?”

Addie started to shake her head and then stopped herself when it clearly hurt. “No, thank you.”

I inclined my head towards the counter. “There’s some acetaminophen in the kit.”

Calder pulled it out as I grabbed the hydrogen peroxide and some gauze. Dousing it, I carefully began to clean Addie’s cheek. “Sorry if this hurts.”
