“It’s on airplane mode now,” Hadley said. “Don’t turn that off unless you have to.”
Deputy Adams appeared with a tall glass of water. “Here you go, Hads.”
She sent the woman a grateful smile. “Thanks.”
Hayes scrolled through the messages, and his face got redder and redder. His jaw was granite when he met his deputy’s gaze. “Get a tech over here. See if we can get that James woman from Fox River, she’s the best with this kind of thing.”
“I’ll put the call in now.” Adams stepped away from our group, scrolling through her cell phone.
Hayes turned himself so he faced Hadley and me. “Start from the beginning of your day. Don’t leave anything out.”
Hadley didn’t give him any grief. She told him about making breakfast with me and the girls, going into town, her run-in with Toby, and then with her mother.
I wove my fingers through hers as she spoke. I needed that point of contact, something to assure me that she was safe. “It might be worth having a conversation with Toby.”
Hadley’s head snapped in my direction. “Seriously, Calder?”
“We need to consider every possibility. He has access to your phone number and email. He’s not happy that you and I are together.”
Hayes typed out notes on his phone before looking up at his sister. “Do you guys have a romantic history?”
“No, we don’t.”
“He made a move on her, and we had a run-in at the park yesterday that wasn’t exactly pleasant.”
Hadley pushed to her feet. “Stop it. Both of you. Toby doesn’t want me to get hurt again, that’s why he’s upset that Calder and I are together. He saw how much it hurt me when we had our falling-out, that’s all. He’d never do something like this.”
Hayes held out a hand in a placating gesture. “Okay. Just calm down. He may not be the one doing this but talking to all of your friends involved in those videos will be a necessity. They may have noticed something you haven’t.”
“Okay,” she whispered.
I grabbed Hadley’s hand and tugged her back down to the couch. “We need to look under every rock.”
“Fine, but this isn’t Toby. You don’t know him like I do.”
“I’ll be the first to apologize when Hayes crosses him off the suspect list.”
She burrowed into my side. “You’d better.”
Hayes typed out a few more things. “Is there anyone else you’ve noticed hanging around? Someone paying you more attention than feels comfortable? Anything.”
Hadley pinched the bridge of her nose as if a headache were forming. “Besides Jackie?”
“Jackie’s a bitch, but unless she got a tech degree I don’t know about, I don’t think this is her,” I said. Jackie was more of a make-a-public-scene-in-the-middle-of-town kind of person.
Hadley stiffened in my arms. “Evan Gibbs.”
Hayes’ eyes narrowed. “The real estate guy you pulled out of the wreck?”
“Yeah. He tried to give me some really extravagant gifts, and I keep running into him.”
“It is a small town,” Hayes pointed out.
“He was out at Painted Rocks when I was cliff diving with my friends. That’s not exactly a popular trail.”
“When did that happen?” I asked.
“Not long after the accident, before you and I, uh, got together.”
