Page 2 of Devil in the Dark

The other man huffs but when the dark stranger whips around, it sounds like he growls low in his throat and the other man sighs and stalks off. “She’s not worth the hassle. She’s not even that good-looking.”

Gasping out a stunned breath, I whip around and stalk off, not really surprised when my savior follows along behind me. Stalking me. I can feel the weight of his eyes on my back and there’s an itch between my shoulder blades where his eyes hit.

“Why are you following me?” I whip around and glare at him. His devilishly dark eyes twinkle with amusement, his long lashes that most women would kill for covering his eyes so that I can’t see what he’s thinking or feeling.

“Because you’re mine, princess. I knew it as soon as I saw you.”

My eyes narrow. “Who are you? And do I know you?”

He laughs. “Now why would you think that?”

“You seem….familiar somehow. Like I know you but I don’t know from where. Or when. I just know that I feel like I should know you.” Jeez! I’m babbling like an idiot.

He leans over and his firm lips drift softly over my jaw, making me gasp. “Still think you should know me?” he groans and I feel his warm breath dance across my cheek. His big body looms over me, pushing aside all the reasons that I know I shouldn’t get involved with this guy.

I moan and he steps back, a wicked smirk on his lips. “I wish you wouldn’t make that noise, baby girl. It makes me want to drag you off into the first bedroom I can find and see if you can figure out who I am before I have you naked under me.”

I gasp and step back, flushing. “You shouldn’t say things like that. You don’t know me.”

“You can’t have it both ways, little one. You either know me or you don’t. I know you or I don’t.”

He shakes his dark head and I see the amusement shimmering in his dark eyes. I step closer, feeling the strangest sense of familiarity. My hand lifts and he flinches back, his hand darting out and grabbing my wrist. Not painfully. Just enough to make sure that I don’t touch him.

“Uh-uh. No touching. Not the mask. Not the face.”

“What can I touch?” I laugh. He yanks me into his body by my arm and my breath huffs out when I feel all of him trapped against me. Heat radiates off of him like a blast furnace. My body feels over-sensitized. Like all my cells are lined up right under my skin trying to get as close to his delicious body as I can. Aching and burning with need. I’ve never felt anything like this. It’s terrifying and exhilarating. Crazy.

He towers over me and I can’t breathe. Can’t think about anything but how good his body feels lined up with mine.

“Who are you?” I whisper breathlessly, my eyes searching his. Not by one flicker does he give away who he is. But the darkness of his gaze is so familiar.

He glances down, shielding his eyes with his long, dark lashes.

“Dammit, I wish you would stop that!” I grunt, yanking on my hand and pulling out of his arms.

“Stop what?”

“You’re a fucking tease. Why don’t you just tell me who you are?”

“That wouldn’t be as much fun, would it?” he laughs. And some niggling little memory tugs at me. Pulls at me until I can’t ignore it anymore.

“I need to go. You have fun tonight, little one.”

And that’s when it clicks. My eyes narrow on him and all the sudden his smile fades. He breathes in deep but never seems to let it out. Like he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop.

And I’ve got a big combat boot dropping on my head. “Judas? Is that you?”

His head shakes and he winces when I glare at him.

“I know it’s you, Judas! How dare you? Did you plan this just to embarrass me?”

I shake my head wildly. “I can’t believe you! How could you do this to me?”

“Relax, princess. I didn’t do anything to you that you didn’t want.”

“I never knew you had such a swelled head, Judas. It is you, isn’t it?” My eyes narrow on his and all of a sudden certain things stand out. Like how hard he was when he pulled me against him.

What’s going on here? Judas has never once hit on me. Never showed the slightest interest in me as more than his best bud.
