She twisted her lips to the side, clearly trying to decide how much to divulge. “I want to find the bastards who are distributing drugs in this area.”
This time Rider failed to keep the expression off his face. “You want to take on Harrison Industries?”Shit. She hadn’t said they were the evil ones here, though Jenna seemed to think they were.
“I don’t know who is guilty, but my company seems the most likely suspect.”
“I’m intrigued. In fact, I was hired to do the same thing.”
Her eyes widened. “You were hired to find out who’s dealing drugs?”
“Yes.” Actually, it was more to find dirt on Richard Delancey.
She shook her head. “You’re just saying that.”
He held up three fingers, even though he’d never been in the Boy Scouts. “I swear it’s the truth. In fact, that’s why Grayson is here too. My boss knows that drugs are my hot button. As for Grayson, that’s a longer story.”
“Who hired you?”
Since she had been more or less open with him, he might as well be open with her. “His name is General Armand. He’s from Florida, where I used to live before my cousin needed my help.”
“Interesting. Does Grayson really own a computer company?”
“He does.”
“And a computer geek thinks he can tackle a whole drug ring?”
She was sharp. He had to hand it to her. “We’ll get backup if we find proof that Harrison Industries or someone else is pushing illegal drugs. Do you know anything?”
“I might, but how about showing me how to kill a werewolf in the heart first. Then I might tell you a few company secrets.”
He smiled. “The woman drives a hard bargain. I like it. You do realize that the heart of a moving animal is hard to hit, right?”
“I figured.” She huffed. “What about if that werewolf is in his human form?”
“That will be easier. But first, how about showing me your skill level?”
Paris nodded. “I know that the person might be hiding or moving, which will make it harder, but I have to try.”
“That’s why I put the target in the tree.”
“I see.”
“Stand where you usually do, and we can take it from there.”
Not wanting to crowd her or make her more nervous, Rider moved back. Paris stood about twenty feet from the target. The problem was that if she needed to be this close, it would only take seconds for her target to shift and attack. At some point, Rider would have to convince her to let him and Grayson do the final takedown.
Paris lifted her arms, widened her stance, and pulled the trigger. Considering her elbows weren’t locked, the recoil from the gun jerked her arm upward. He’d have thought she’d be more experienced than that.
“That’s okay. You need to warm up,” he said. In reality, if she didn’t hit her target on the first try, she might not be given a second chance.
Paris nodded and tried again. This time, she moved her left foot forward in a steadier stance, took aim, and shot.Ping! It wasn’t enough to knock the target off the branch, but it was a hit.
She spun around. “If I hit you in the shoulder, could you shift and take me down?”
He was happy that she understood her shot wasn’t a kill shot by any stretch. “That little bullet would have stung a bit, and I might have cursed, but I sure as hell would have shifted and killed you before you had the chance to aim again.”
“Fuck.”
The lady could swear. “May I give you some pointers?”
