She had stumbled onto Katrina a few times, only in passing, in the hallway and for some reason Katrina didn’t seem to see her or, if she did, she pretended not to. Eva wondered if Frey or Dorian had anything to do with that, or maybe, Katrina simply got bored of bullying her and had already found a new target.

Eva felt bad that she couldn’t focus on Katrina right now. She needed someone to put her in her place, badly, but Eva couldn’t waste her energy on that right now. She was waiting for her dad. She knew that once he came, something monumental would happen and she needed to be ready. She couldn’t afford to dissipate her strength and focus on someone as irrelevant as Katrina right now. That meant that whoever was to become her next object of bully affection, would have to deal with it on their own.

One afternoon after school, she remembered Sebastian. She hadn’t seen him in school. She wondered about this. Was it possible that their classes never overlapped, not even once? She’d seen everyone else: Bella most frequently, Frey and Dorian, as well, Katrina unfortunately, but never Sebastian. Did he even attend this school as a regular student or did some special rules apply to him?

What surprised her though, was the fact that he was the most popular topic of girl talk in the school bathroom. It wasn’t Dorian, the most well liked jock, or Frey, who was also considered one of the best catches in school. It was the lone wolf, Sebastian, who seemed to follow a set of rules which applied only to him and no one else.

“I heard that he got a girl pregnant, and they had to send her away, so her parents don’t find out!” one girl said in a hush-hush tone, as Eva did her business in the bathroom.

They didn’t seem to mind that there were other girls there, listening in. Everyone found this gossip juicy enough to spread around, so it popped throughout the school, like fertilized weeds with no sign of any eradication.

“I heard his mom is a witch of the first order!” another girl said.

“What? No! His mom is half werewolf, half water nymph.”

“That’s crazy!” a third one giggled.

“I heard he killed his dad, so his mom sent him here, that his

bloodlust is unquenchable!”

“Is that why he’s a blood dealer? So, he can have access to blood any time he needs it?”

“Probably!”

At that point, Eva would flush, making them stop talking, even though they didn’t really care. She’d walk out, wash her hands, and watch them in the reflection of the mirror, as they continued spreading their gossip, no matter the cost. To them, it didn’t matter who it was about. They enjoyed the mayhem it might bring. But, Sebastian was an especially ungrateful target, as he never commented on anything they’d ask him or tell him. He’d just shrug his shoulders and walk away.

But, what was there to say? Eva wondered. Probably, silence was the best reply in these situations. If he defended himself, would they even believe him? Or would they consider him completely guilty of these crimes they were accusing him of anyway?

Eva walked into the school library, with these thoughts in mind. She was curious whether any of this was true, but she would never ask him, straight to his face. She felt like she didn’t know him well enough to do any such thing.

She skimmed through the titles of books she both recognized and didn’t recognize, not really sure what it was she was looking for. She came here to escape from everyone, hoping for some peace and quiet, and maybe to find a good friend in a book.

“Hey!”

Someone jumped in front of her, almost giving her a heart attack. She got pulled back by an invisible force, and almost stumbled into a row of books, which luckily, stood in their place firmly. She pressed her hand against her heart and took a deep breath.

“You scared the crap out of me!” she hissed, and someone from behind immediately shushed her. “Sorry,” she quickly apologized, blushing.

Without a word, she pulled Sebastian by the hand, leading him to the furthest part of the library, where she knew no one ever went. They disappeared among the rows and rows of shelves with books no one was ever in need of, but they still stood there, taking up their rightful space.

“You shouldn’t jump in front of people like that, you know,” she told him, now that they were able to talk, though still whispering close to each other.

She could feel her heart racing, increased by his closeness to her. He obviously wasn’t aware of the effect he had on her and he got even closer. He smelled like he’d been in the woods in the early morning and his lips were sprinkled with dew. She wanted to kiss it off of him, to taste it, but she had no idea how he would react to this. Would he kiss her back or would he push her away? She was too scared to find out.

“And you shouldn’t promise coffees you never deliver,” he grinned back.

His eyes were the color of murky waters and she immediately remembered the gossip about his mother being half water nymph. For a second, she wondered if that was true, as he gazed at her, waiting for her to reply.

“I’ve been trying to find you all this time,” she told him the truth. “It’s like you don’t even go to this school!”

He laughed at this, suppressing his laughter with his hands.

“What makes you say that?” he asked.

“I never see you at school.”

“I also don’t see you. Does that mean you also don’t attend it?”
