I sighed. “Again, thank you, but I don’t want to impose. It’s not like I’ll do anything different in this hospital bed than I will at the hotel.”

“Who will take care of you?” Sebastián asked.

The question was an innocent one, but it hit close to home. I forced a smile. “That’s what room service is for.”

There were voices in the hall outside, and Melba peeked out the door. “Sebastián, your father is here.”

Like a rocket, the boy took off and disappeared around the doorway.

“Thank you for staying with me,” I told Melba. “And for helping me in the first place. If Sebastián hadn’t come by, I don’t know how long I would have been there for.”

“I told him not to run ahead, but God had other plans. He sent Sebastián as a guardian angel.”

“Maybe,” I murmured.

“I know.”

“You don’t need to hang around,” I assured her. “If your ride is here, please feel free to go.”

Melba patted my hand and smiled warmly. I expected her to say something else, but instead she just stood there.

Okay. A woman of few words. I could get behind that. Especially since my leg was still killing me.

“Come, come,” Sebastián’s high-pitched voice said from outside the room. “Meet my new friend.”

I couldn’t help but smile. Perhaps Sebastiánwassomething of a guardian angel. One thing was for sure: I would miss him.

I’d always had a soft spot for kids. In another life, instead of working in media, I would have gone into childcare.

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” a man’s deep voice said.

Sebastián entered the room, tugging a man in a suit behind him. I blinked, trying to get my eyes to refocus. Why did this guy look so familiar?

Strong jaw. Deep dimples. Wavy, black hair.

My heart stilled. “Rodrigo?”

CHAPTER7

RODRIGO

“Georgia?” I worked my jaw, trying to get more words out, but they wouldn’t come.

Was it really her? Sitting in a hospital bed, an injured leg propped up, staring at me with wide blue eyes?

In a flash, it all came back to me. The sunsets on rooftops. Kissing on my couch. Our first walk in the rain. Telling her I couldn’t trust her.

My chest burned.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

She continued to stare at me like she’d seen a ghost. “I had an accident on an ATV. Sebastián saved me.”

I put my hand on Sebastián’s shoulder. “That’s what he said. He didn’t tell me your name, though.”

Sebastián was eagerly looking back and forth between the two of us. “You know each other?”

“Yes,” I said slowly, waiting to see if Georgia would take the lead.
