“We’ll see about that, I’ll set off the silent alarm,” Arthur announced, his maniacal laughter filling the room, making me shiver. “You’ll never be able to fight off that many guards and keep her safe. No one is that good.”

Savo clutched me tightly to his chest as he bolted out of the room. All the motion made me sick to my stomach, so I buried my face in his neck and held on tight.

“I’ve got you,Keksík,I won’t let anything happen to you,” Savo whispered.

“There they go,” a man shouted. “Don’t use your guns, we can't risk hurting the Omega. Switch to the tasers.”

The sound of booted feet running down the hall after us had me peeking over his shoulder. Ten men with murder in their eyes were chasing after us. Each of them held an odd-looking gun that must be the taser he was talking about. Savo was fast and we were keeping the lead, but how far could we get before they cornered us?

“Savo, you need to let me go and get out of here,” I whispered harshly. “They won’t hurt me, but they’ll kill you if they catch you. Please, you have to stay alive, let me go. I’ll make sure I slow them down, you can even throw me at them, they'll have to stop. Please, Savo I can't lose you,” I begged, my throat tightening as I spoke.

He ignored me and picked up the pace, gaining more of a lead. He paused long enough to kick down a door and I found myself plopped on my bed. Twisting so I could see what was happening, I saw Savo slam the door closed and shove furniture in front of it to slow them down. Once satisfied, he jogged over to me and cupped my face, kissing me so fiercely he stole the last bit of breath from my lungs.

“Keksík, I’m never going to abandon you. We will get through this together. There is a plan in place, we just have to stall long enough for help to come at five o’clock.”

“What time is it now?” I asked, looking around the room for a clock.

Savo looked at his watch. “It’s four-thirty, but I have an idea.”

“What’s your idea?” I questioned, flinching when the door started to rattle as people banged on it. “You didn’t block the other door from your room.” I cried when the sound of another door getting kicked in was heard close by.

“Cambrie, I need you to look at me,” Savo said urgently.

Meeting his gaze, I tried to stop my hands from shaking as my already frayed nerves were only getting worse.

“Do. You. Trust me?” Savo asked gravely.

I knew the answer to that the second he asked. “With my life.”

He searched my face as if trying to make sure I meant what I was saying. “I need you to know that you are everything to me, Cambrie and no matter what happens I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe.”

“I know you will,” I answered, kissing him softly. “You’re my guardian angel.”

He scooped me up in his arms like a child. I wrapped my legs around his waist, not caring it made my skirt rise to just cover my butt as I clung to his neck. Walking over to the bookshelf by the fireplace, he hit a lever and pulled it away from the wall revealing a stone path.

“There’s no light in here so just keep holding onto me tightly, alright?” Savo instructed.

“Okay,” I answered, resting my head on his shoulder.

When the bookcase was back in place, the world went dark. While I wasn’t afraid of the dark after spending so many years trapped in the basement, I didn’t relish the idea of spending time in it. Savo moved with confidence as he ran, a hand along one wall, leaving the other to cup my butt holding me to him. Voices from my room echoed and then a glow of light told me they’d found the entrance.

“Savo, they’re coming,” I hissed, trying to keep my voice low in my panic.

He paused for a second and switched hands that were supporting me and started to jog down the tunnel. With the soft glow we could see a little better, allowing him to move faster. Then he paused when we came to a door and tried to find the latch that would open it.

“They can’t have gotten far,” a voice said, echoing down the tunnel.

A whine escaped my lips, making Savo tense as he held me. Then he shifted his hold, pushing me up and over his shoulder. A hand trailed up my leg pushing the fabric of my skirt out of the way leaving my butt exposed, only wearing my undies.

“What are you doing?” I demanded.

“You said you trusted me with your life. What about your heart?” Savo asked.

I frowned, wiggling in his arms. “What are you talking about?”

“To trust someone with your life is one thing but to trust them with your heart is a completely separate matter. Could you see us together? Would you be happier with me in your life or out of it?” Savo pressed as the voices got closer, and I saw flashlight beams bobbing as they ran.

“While I don’t understand why you’re asking me this now, I’ll answer,” I huffed. “If you left me, my heart would break and I’m not sure I could bear losing you or any other member of my pack. You’re all mine and I want us to live a happy loving life together, so if you have a plan to get us the hell out of here to do that, I’m all ears,” I snapped, feeling scared and frustrated.
