Simple. To the point.

He rarely initiated text messages, but always responded to hers within the hour. He’d sent one first this time. This was a welcomed deviation. I miss him… It had been a few days since they’d laid eyes on one another. Her body grew all hot and warm as nasty thoughts of their love-making sessions entered her mind. They couldn’t keep their hands off one another…

Flopping back against the couch, she replayed the way this man touched her, and fucked her until she saw stars, the moon, the sun, and three leaf clovers. Jack was a monster in the sack. Sensual. Explorative. Nasty as fuck. The sexiest part of all was that he was confident in his abilities, without being arrogant. There wasn’t an inch of her body his lips hadn’t kissed, or his tongue hadn’t roamed. He knew what he was doing, and he took his time. He was everything and more. She’d never had it so damn good proving once again, as her best friend had told her: You have to watch the big, quiet ones. They’re the freakiest.

Adding a few more items to the grocery list, she tossed the pen and pad down, then felt her bladder about to give out after two large cups of hot coffee. She sprang into action, retreated to the restroom, and relieved herself. After washing her hands and changing into some toasty cinnamon-colored pajamas, she made her way back into the living room to pour a glass of wine, microwave some popcorn, and watch a bit of television. As she made her way towards the galley, she paused. Her phone screen was glowing. She drew closer to the coffee table where’d she left it, picked it up, and noticed a missed call from a number she didn’t recognize.

Oh, they left a voicemail, too. I must have my ringer too low. I didn’t even hear it ring.

She pressed the play button for the voicemail, brought it up to her ear, and sat down on the couch, crossing her legs.

“Hello, Ms. Milton. This is John Agers. I’m a private detective from Manhattan, New York. I am contacting you because Angelique Milton hired me to try and locate you.” Her heart dropped to her stomach and felt like a rock sloshing against her insides. “Your mother is concerned for your wellbeing, Ms. Milton. She’s been searching for you for months. I want to make it clear that I have already confirmed that this is in fact your number, and your address is 3428 East Hilton Drive, Fairbanks, Alaska, apartment 2D. You work at Gus’s Restaurant full time as a server, and your date of birth is July 25th. You currently lease a car that has a license plate number of…”

The man went on and on, naming details only God himself would know. “…If you are in danger, I will take that into consideration before proceeding. If, however, you just wish to be left alone, that is perfectly fine, too, but I do have to let Ms. Milton know that I have located her daughter, per our agreement. Please contact me with any information that you feel is pertinent before I do. You have forty-eight hours. I can be reached at, 212-555-5521. Thank you, and good night.”

She played the message back one more time, and then, with a shaky hand, placed her phone back onto the coffee table, covering her grocery list. Kim sat there for a bit, rocking her leg back and forth. After a few moments and some deep breathing, she got up, and poured herself a glass of wine. She thought about calling Martha, but then thought better of it. Martha was a mother, too, and may try to encourage her to reach out to her mom. She didn’t understand the ins and outs of the situation, the details. Besides, it was complicated, and there was no point in trying to explain it to the woman because Martha was all about family, no matter what. She chugged the red wine in a few unsophisticated gulps. Some of it dribbled down her chin. She poured another glass, then made her way back into the living room.

I should call Jack. He told me to call him anytime I want. She blinked back angry tears. I tell him all the time he can talk to me, but then, I bottle up when he wants information from me about what happened. I just don’t want to be judged… Jack is more conservative than I am. He might think I should be grateful to even have a mom that’s still alive, no matter how crazy she is—but it’s not that simple. I finally have some peace. I have a few friends now, too. Besides, I even scouted some land for my hotel. I had written out a business plan. I met someone I like… someone I care about. Someone I could see myself with. I’ve never met or dated a man like Jack, we’re so different, but that’s what makes it all the more wonderful. I’m learning from him… and he from me. I’m finally getting happy again, and then BOOM! Here comes Hurricane Mama…
