Nolan set the cup off to the side and then helped her get a drink of water.
She sighed when she sat back.
“Let’s put you back down, baby girl. I want you to getmore sleep.”
“Have you eaten?”
“I’ve grabbed a few sandwiches.”
She sighed and closed her eyes. He was acting so distant, and she hoped it was only because he was tired and worried, but she had the feeling it went deeper than that.
When she awoke next, the morning sun shone through the window, and Nolan was leaning back in a chair with his head resting on the back, his legs out, and his hands on his stomach. It looked extremely uncomfortable. She hoped they’d be able to go home so they could be in their bed and eat food they enjoyed.
Nolan was starting to look worse than she thought she might.
He roused when the door opened, and Jonah and Holly came through with cups and sacks.
She heard Nolan moan when he sat up and then stretched.
“Hey, we brought some breakfast sandwiches for you guys and the guards in the hallway.”
“Thank you. I really need the coffee.”
Jonah handed him a cup and then opened up a tall glass of orange juice before he sat her up a bit. “Is this okay?”
“Yes.”
“Good. The vitamins will do you good.”
He helped hold the glass until she was steady. The first sip was tart and cold, but the next few tasted sweet and felt good sliding down her throat. She was shocked when she finished the glass. She was full, but it gave her energy and made her head feel better.
A nurse came in, checked her vitals, and gave her more pain medicine. By the time the doctor arrived, she was smiling at something Holly was saying.
Chapter Eleven
“Well, you look chipper, young lady.”
“I feel chipper, sir.”
He studied her chart and then unwrapped the bandage on her head and poked around the wound on top. “It’s healing well. How’s the headache?”
“It’s better,” Caylee said.
“I’ll still send some stronger pain tablets home with you that you can take for the next day or so, and then regular Tylenol should be enough. Now, let’s check your shoulder.”
That bandage came off, and he probed the wound. “This is looking fine. If it starts to get red or inflamed, bring her back in. I’m a little concerned about infection, so we gave her some antibiotics. I’m hoping it’s enough.”
“So, you are sending me home today?” Caylee asked.
“If you have someone with you, I will. You won’t be able to move around very well. Your ankle will hold you. Just be careful and go slow.”
She looked at Nolan to see him staring out the window with his hands in his pockets and his back to her. Then she glanced at Holly and Jonah and saw the same confusion on their faces.
“We have an extra bedroom you can sleep in,” Jonah said.
Nolan turned suddenly. “No, she’ll be with me.” He didn’t sound like he was looking forward to it, and she almost accepted Jonah’s invitation, but she decided to wait to see what happened.
“There are two FBI agents out in the hallway waiting to talk to you,” the doctor said.
