Maybe he could talk her into a nap later on. Damn, he needed to get his mind back on work. He was already behindwith his own work because of the human trafficking business they were breaking down.
Fuck, that was satisfying. Seeing the hope on the women’s faces when they were told they were safe made it even better.
Someone knocked on his door. “Come in.”
Alastair walked in and sat in one of the chairs in front of his desk.
Duncan’s eyebrows snapped together because of the look on his brother’s face. “What’s up?”
“I wanted to know if things are good between you two?” Alastair asked.
“Yes. Thank God. How about you and Beth?”
He’d never seen his brother so frustrated before. “Hell, I asked her to marry me, and she said no.”
“She what? Why?”
“She said I was only asking because I felt pressure to do it and that I didn’t really want to.”
Duncan snorted. “She knows no one could pressure you to do anything, right?”
“Yes, but she’s fighting me on it.”
“Just tell her it’s going to happen.”
“I tried that, and she started crying, saying she’d never forgive me if I made her marry me.”
“Fuck, what are you going to do?” Duncan asked.
“I have no idea.”
“Ask the girls what you should do. They might have some ideas.”
“Good idea.” He stood and walked to the door. “Is there anything you need from me?”
“No. I’m just going to get caught up on work.”
“Okay. I’m going to try to spend more time with my Beth. Maybe I can wear her down.”
“You’ll get her to marry you sooner or later.”
“It better be sooner. I’ve waited too long already.”
Duncan watched Alastair leave and sat back in his desk chair. He would never have thought Beth would ever fight being married to Alastair. He could see the depth of love the woman felt for his brother. So why fight it?
Fuck, women were so damn complicated. He knew his angel would drive him crazy for the rest of his life, but he still looked forward to every day he’d get to spend with her.
He stood and walked out of his office. He had a ton of work to do, but his wife was the only thing on his mind, and he couldn’t go another minute without her.
The End
