“Cory, please tell me you packed the ingredients for s’mores. We’ve never camped without them,”I say once everyone has returned to their seats.
“What kind of person do you take me for? Of course, I packed them.”
“I think it’s best if I cook them for you, Summer,” Dylan says out of nowhere. I’m about to tell him I’m perfectly capable, when he adds, “Last time you burnt the shit out of the marshmallow.” He winks.
Cory barks out a laugh because he’s not wrong.
“Don’t worry, I remember exactly how you like them,” he says with a grin.
I raise an eyebrow in challenge and wave a hand toward the fire. “Be my guest.”
When the first one is cooked, Dylan holds it up high in triumph. “Perfection!” he exclaims, and I’ve got to admit, it looks mouth-watering.
“I’ll be the judge of that,” I say, jumping to my feet. I walk straight over and, without thinking, take a bite while it’s still in his hands. It’s completely innocent. My lips don’t touch his fingers. There’s no longing looks into each other’s eyes. It’s just one friend feeding another.
Dylan laughs at my antics, and the sound distracts us from realizing that everyone else is quiet. When I look back at Logan, he’s smirking at me.Ah.“You can do better,” I say, trying to recover and tapping Dylan on the nose before walking back toward my seat.
Logan pulls me into his lap as I walk past and wraps his arms around me. “What’s going on with you and Dylan? What did I miss? When did you actually meet?” He lowers his voice and raises an eyebrow. I roll my eyes.
“Nothing. There’s nothing going on. We officially met a month ago, but he’s been friends with Thomas for a while.”
“Ah, so I’ve probably seen him with Thomas before.”
“Makes sense.” I shrug. It is the most obvious reason. Not sure why I didn’t think of that before.
“Why does Gemma think you’ve known each other for years?”
“Long story short, we may have told a few people we’ve been best friends since we were kids, and now, it’s hard to backtrack.”
Logan laughs out loud, drawing attention our way.
“Shhh!” I slap him on the arm.
“Only you…” He shakes his head and smirks.
“I know, but I didn’t think we’d really see each other that often, if ever. It was harmless.”
“Seems to piss Gemma off.”
“I noticed that. It’s strange. She was totally fine with it.” Her mood swing is truly perplexing. Unless Dylan said something that would cause this reaction. Nothing else has changed.
“She mentioned you broke up with your boyfriend. Joel, I think she said?” He raises his eyebrows.
Oh, that’s changed.Logan knows without me saying that I was never in a relationship.
“Maybe that made her worry about you. You know, now that you’re single and all.”
“Maybe.” I smile.
“Well, I for one amthrilledthat you’re single again.” He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively and playfully kisses my neck, causing me to giggle. God, he brings out the worst in me.
I push him away. “Later.”
“You bet.”
When we look back at the group, Dylan and Gemma are both watching us. Gemma’s smiling, but Dylan looks uncomfortable. “And there’s nothing else going on with you two?” Logan asks, clearly noticing what I do.
“Nothing at all. We’re not even really friends.”
