“There’s no need to thank me, baby. I’d be a shitty boyfriend if I had done any different.” Hell, I’d be a horrible human being if I had just walked away. It still baffles my mind that Joe is the only person that came out to see what the hell was going on. I need to buy him some sort of gift to show him how grateful I am for his interference.
I’m going to have to rethink the floor I live on. It’s not a problem going up the stairs by myself. But I have a sleeping Sophia in my arms and it makes the trek more difficult. The halls are narrow and I’m walking at an awkward angle to keep from accidentally hitting her head on the wall.
I gently tickle her side to wake her again. “I need to set you down so I can unlock the door.”
“Sure,” she stands and leans against the wall. My girl hasn’t had much rest tonight and I feel awful for waking her up so much.
Once we’re inside, I lock the door behind us. Her steps are sluggish as we make our way to my bedroom. I pull back the covers and help her slide in. “I’m going to text Corey and let him know we won’t be in until later this evening.”
“No, we can go in at our normal time,” she argues.
“That’s not going to happen,” I say as I shoot off a text to our boss. “You’ll be lucky if he lets you come in at all.” He responds within in seconds. Yep, we’re both off for the rest of the day. I’m not telling her that, though. She’ll protest until she’s blue in the face. I’ll just “forget” to wake her up.
I take off my jeans and shirt before sliding in behind her. My arms around her would be amazing, but I don’t want her to feel smothered. I never want her to think of me in the same light as Dawson. My worry is unfounded, though. “Can you hold me?” Her voice is a whisper in the quiet room.
I wrap my arms around her, pulling her closer to me. There’s no way in hell I’m ever letting this woman go.
