Adrian: With chocolate and sprinkles...
I'm definitely not one to pass on donuts, especially if chocolate is involved. That may be the only perk of him waking me up so early.
Sophia: Fine. I'm coming, but you better have a donut waiting for me as soon as I open the door.
At the sound of my feet hitting the floor my brother throws his arm up in victory. "Finally, maybe I can go back to sleep now."
"Oh, shut up," I throw a pillow at him. He grunts as it hits him in the face, and it's my turn though my hands up in the air in victory. "If you really want to go back to sleep, go climb in my bed."
He doesn't argue. With a blanket in hand he stumbles his way down the hall and into my room before shutting the door firmly behind him.
I rub my eyes to make sure they are clear of any sleep. It’s the best I can do on short notice. He’s definitely not getting beauty queen material right now. My walk toward the door resembles a zombie trying to find its way toward brains.
"Well aren't you a ray of sunshine," Adrian laughs as I open the door.
"Nope," I hold out my hand. "I was promised a donut, and yet there isn't one in my hand."
He sets the chocolate donut, with sprinkles, in my waiting hand. I don't say thank you, or any of that, because I'm too busy shoving the donut in my mouth. Leaving the door open I walk to the couch and make myself comfortable. "I'll have to remember that you aren't a morning person," Adrian says as he shuts the door.
"Not even a little bit," I mumble through my mouth full of food. "It doesn't help with the late night. I'd still be sleeping, at least until noon, had you not been banging on my door."
Adrian winces at my comment. "Sorry, next time I will call before I show up." He looks awkward standing in the middle of my living room, completely lost like he doesn't know what to do. His eyes are everywhere but on me, studying his surroundings and trying to get a better picture of who I am as a person. He isn't going to get much because of the sparse decorations. I haven’t had much time, or the will, to do add things to the wall. A year later and I’m still trying to figure out who I am as a person.
"You know you can sit down, right?" I pat the seat next to me on the couch. "Just because I'm grouchy doesn't mean I'm going to bite. Besides, you still have the donuts and you are way over there. How am I supposed to reach the box?"
He stares at me warily. "Promise you won't bite?" He takes a few cautious steps closer to me. "Not that I would mind, I just don't want to lose a hand because I woke you up. Where's your brother? I thought he was staying with you.” He looks around the room as if Jay is going to pop up out of nowhere. That might actually be kind of funny.
"He's about as happy as I am about the early morning wake up call, so I sent him to my room to get the rest of his beauty sleep.” Now that all of his attention is focused on me, I feel nervous. My hair is most likely sticking up in all directions, and I run my fingers over it attempting, and most likely failing, to calm it down.
Judging by the shit eating grin on Adrian's face, I don't think it's working. This is why showing up unannounced is a horrible idea. If you are excited to see that person, there's a chance you will see them when they aren't looking their best and end up giving them a complex. This isn’t a first day of dating look I have going on. This normally happens after being together for a bit. Adrian places his hand over mine keeping me from fretting with my hair. "You look fine, Sophia."
Groaning, I shake my head, "I'm not sure what your definition of fine is but this isn't it."
"You're beautiful no matter how you look." He’s staring into my eyes, hell into my soul, and I feel each word as he says them.
The compliment puts me at ease. The whole time I was with Dawson, I had to look picture-perfect and it's hard to get away from that mentality when it comes to somebody I'm interested in. Instead of showing any sort of reaction to his words, I change the subject "So are you just going to hang on to those donuts, or are you going to share them?"
Adrian scoots back enough to make room for the box of donuts. He doesn't take one, but gestures for me to get whatever I want. There's a plastic bag sitting on the floor beside him that I didn't even notice until he pulls it up into his lap. "I wasn't sure what you like to drink with your breakfast,” he pulls out four bottles. "So, I got a little bit of everything."
Next to the box he sets down chocolate milk, strawberry milk, water, and orange juice. "I think regular milk feels left out. How can you get all the other kinds and not get that one?"
He shudders, "I don't see how anybody can bring themselves to drink regular milk. It's boring and has a weird aftertaste. The only acceptable way to drink it is with a ton of either chocolate or strawberry syrup." He nods matter-of-factly, as if he has to get the point across to me.
"I'll take the..." I tap my finger on my chin acting like I'm deep in thought. "Orange juice."
"Then why were you giving me shit about the milk?" He scrunches his nose up. It’s actually kind of adorable.
He had a point about the milk but I don't even like it with the extra syrup and stuff. "Because you woke me up at an ungodly hour. It’s only fair that I give you crap about whatever I want. Next time, you’ll call. Or better yet, let me sleep in."
He sets the bottles I didn't choose on the coffee table. "You're kind of cute when you're moody," he chuckles.
"The only reason I let you in is because you have food," I shrugged. "And maybe because you're a little hot. Otherwise, I would have let you stay outside until you gave up and left."
"You think I'm hot?” He leans closer going in for a kiss. This is not good. Normally it wouldn’t be a problem, but just no.
That's not going to happen yet. I put up my hand in defense, "I haven't even brushed my teeth. You're not kissing me. That’s gross."
He's on the verge of arguing when Jay's voice fills the room. "Are those donuts?" He's just short of skipping to the couch, and plops himself down beside me. Reaching around me to grab a delicious pastry, he asks, "So what's on the agenda for today? I don’t want to be stuck in this apartment."
And this is the beginning of the end of my brother. So much for taking a backseat and not intruding. Siblings can be so annoying.
